Old Laptop , XP or 8.1 ?

Should i reinstall windows XP on it or try windows 8.1 ? 

 

 

Pentium M 1.73GHz

512MB RAM

Nvidia GeForce Go 6400

 

For light browsing

If you go with 8 you will have to bump up the ram.

windows 8.1 needs a minimum of 1GB RAM!

I don't think you can, Nvidia tends to leave older low end graphic card without drivers for windows 8, but maybe it does have support so try checking around in google and nvidia's website.

 

You can also replace it with a potato, she won't notice!

XP has no support. goes out the window.

Won't even let you install W8.

I have seen it run with that much as well with a better desktop cpu and it ran like a turd. Bumped it up to 3gb and it was perfect.

ZorinOS or Mint (Cinnamon) might be a good choice. Browsing is the same on almost all operating systems with GUI. :D

Mint may be too heavy for old hardware.

Xubuntu or even better Lubuntu. Your grandma wont see a sdifference between lxde and XP.

PS: why are you fine with giving poor grandma win8 and not OK with Unity?
