If the OP had asked about the old Sony Playstation Eye, the answer would be a yes or at least a very definitive maybe.  However a camera like the Nex 3N isn't designed for this sort of usage.

There is a relatively cheap way of doing this.

Earlier I was checking out cheap HDMI capture cards for the reason of using a camera/video camera as a webcam.

I came up with the following solution:

Get one of the timeleak (or rebranded names) capture cards.

not super cheap, but you can't go much cheaper, although you have to sacrifice a PCI slot.

Now this card SHOULD handle 1080i and 720p at 50/60fps, just 1080p is a no go unless you're fine with 24fps.

PC 1 Workstation/Gaming: Intel i7 5820K, GTX 980 SLI 16GB DDR4
PC 2 Capture/Stream: Intel i7 5820K, GTX 970, 32GB DDR4

Capture card: SC-512N1-L/DVI

Mixer: Behringer X2222USB

Consoles: Mountain of retro stuff
