Designing and 3D Printing a Case

Hey all, after seeing the node 3d printed case project, I got inspired to design my own case. I am no wizard in the art of CAD, but I've been doing my best in inventor pro. What do you all think? I'm still adding details, such as more grilles and PSU mounting, but as for the overall design, I would love some feed back. I took some inspiration from the old mac pro, and the enthoo cases from phanteks. The idea is to use a mountain mods rear IO panel for the IO shield and pci slots, and if I could find some money, stuff it full of x99 and gtx 980 goodness. I'd love your opinions and to share this with the community. Thanks!

Seems to be good. From the looks the whole, left side is a window? I'd potentially make some of it plastics to cover up 3.5inch bays ect ect and will make it overall look nicer. One thing is you could make a little basement for the PSU like the NZXT H440 which to me just makes it look once again overall better and makes cable management very good.

Haha yeah but it doesn't look to much like both from the quick google search. Like he said it is like a combo of both.

I noticed the red lining of the little oval cut out thing in the front. It would look cool if may some LED fans were behind those and that was Kindda like a red tinted glass to give it a "glow"

The idea is this case would be made from 3d printed and acrylic parts. For a basement, I've seen a lot of really cool acrylic powersupply covers. I designed a rough hard drive cage that would hang out in the top part of the case where the 5.25 bays would go, so I don't think that would be a problem.

That's a good idea about incorporating LED's into the front grille cover. I made a good bit of progress adding details to the interior, but since my little 4670k is having trouble keeping up with all of the hexagons and other geometry, it crashed while I was sketching out the rear IO and 120mm grille. I'll update this with new renderings as I make more progress. Thanks for the input!

If you plan on ever watercooling you should take that into account, perhaps having enough clearance at the top for a dual 120mm rad. also maybe adding grommets for cable management. A neat thing that fractal design does (maybe others? not sure) is having mounting slots on the back of the motherboard tray for ssds

If you plan on ever watercooling you should take that into account, perhaps having enough clearance at the top for a dual 120mm rad. also maybe adding grommets for cable management. A neat thing that fractal design does (maybe others? not sure) is having mounting slots on the back of the motherboard tray for ssds

yeah that's the idea. As mentioned before, I'm no CAD wizard, but the idea would be to (if i could get sponsors) throw in two gtx 980's (not TI's because they produce too much heat), and a 5820k. I'm hoping that two 240's would be enough to keep that under control, but I don't know too much about the thermal performance of water cooling outside of AIO's. The hard drive cage I drafted would take 2 3.5's, and then I think two mounting positions for ssd's on the other side of the motherboard tray would be reasonable. perhaps I could do that cut out thing on the other panel like the green molecule build?

We could use a shot of the interior.

Are you planning on building it or is this more of an academic exercise?

Kinda both. The problem is i'm a broke high school sophmore with about $200 to his name and it would cost more than that just to build this thing. That being said, this is the most ambitious CAD project I've taken on, so I guess it's also just practice to sharpen my skills. As of right now, the interior has very little to show and whenever I try to work on it, Inventor locks up (pretty sure it's because my i5 is struggling) so it's difficult to add details.

It's interesting that you are having problems with Inventor, I am an Engineer and my workstation is based on an i5 (3570).

Keep working on it, there are a lot of lasers in the world and a ton of companies that are looking to support young people with skills in CAD work. In my high school career I had a few parts lasered and machined by different companies.

There's a hacker space a few minutes from my house that has a laser and I have an ultimaker, but im so confused on why I'm having issues. I was convinced it was my cpu, but if you can get by with a 3570 I have no clue. Having a look at HW monitor and task manager, I don't use more than about 4 of my 16gb of RAM, my gtx 970 is barely used, and my cpu bounces around 50% utilization (except rendering).

That's really good to hear about potential careers, I really enjoy modeling ideas that I have even if I sometimes struggle to create what I see in my head on the computer. Do you use solidworks by any chance? From what I've seen from other people it's a great piece of software, but I much prefer the price of $0 for a student's copy of Inventor.

Thanks again for the support!

My company uses Solidworks on some of our legacy products but we primarily work out of Creo.

Modeling is all about practice, and not being afraid to try different methods. You can do this!

Thanks, man! Do you have any idea on what is slowing down inventor to the point where it stops responding?

Not really. Unfortunately I havent worked out of Inventor since high school. Is your GPU overclocked? I have heard before that an overclocked GPU can cause troubles in some CAD programs, though I have never ran into any problems with either my 570 (through college) or my 980.

I tried using after burner to push my 970 g1, but I think i took it off due to stability issues. I don't think I did too well in the silicon lottery, but then again this is my first graphics card and I have very little experience with overclocking them. I'll double check though.

*a few moments later*

I just made sure the gpu is at stock settings and it is still slowing down a lot when I try manipulating geometry. My shadow play fps counter reads a whopping 1 fps when moving and re-sizing faces, however orbiting around the model is just fine on frame rates. After double checking all my utilizations, the gpu core maxed out at 22%, RAM is constant at 4.1GB used, and the cpu tops out at 37% when things get choppy. Does anyone else have any input on this? Thanks!

So I have learned from this page that Inventor only uses one core for things like sketching and face manipulation. I might be able to reduce my agony by overclocking my cpu a bit more to get the one core that is used to work a bit faster, but I'm not convinced this will solve my issues, and I'm already a little uncomfortable by the high 70's my i5 gets to under heavy loads. If I give it a bit more voltage, I might be able to get 4.5 out of it, but again, I'm not sold on this fixing the issues. But I guess it's worth a shot as trying to cut out the 270 hexagons for the rear 120mm grille was a bitch after about 20 had been selected for extrusion.

Update time, I put a few hours of work into the project today, overclocked my cpu another 300 mhz (which did help when selecting and modify more than about ten faces) at upped the voltage to about 1.27, and fixed the lighting with rendering so there are less shadows and the colors look less depressing. Today I worked on mostly the motherboard tray, powersupply mounting and the pci slots/motherboard I/O which will be taken care of by this

Hey, all, I haven't gotten too much work done over the last few months with school starting and everything, but I did a bit more detail work and found some models of water cooled 980's and a maximus 7 gene. Also, I switched from Inventor to Fusion 360 which is much more intuitive and produces nicer looking renders. Soon I'll take on the daunting task of splitting dis bish into printable pieces *shivers*.

Alright, for anyone still interested/following this topic, I figured out how to split the case into individual parts that I can split further to allow them to be small enough to fit on my Ultimaker's bed. Now I just have to fix the alignment of the front grid,post-189833-0-52797200-1447291359_thumb.

and pick if I should go with red or blue.

Alright, I have finished the overall design and I am happy with the result! I still need to finish splitting parts into printable pieces, but the finished digital product is complete. Here are the 'money shot' renderings I came up with to show off to potential sponsors. I still have a lot of work to do in order to make the case manufacturable on my Ultimaker Original, but I am very happy to have completed the final look of the whole thing.

To those who are keeping up with these very inconsistent updates, thank you so much for paying attention to this project I have dedicated so many hours to, refining details, making sure things matched up with standards, and simply completing the project. Again, I still have work to do, but I'm almost ready to build this thing. Aside from @Complx, who used a much more expensive laser printer via Full Spectrum Laser for his build, something like this has never been done before. As far as I know, no one has created their own case using a desktop FDM 3D printer. In this way, it is different and in my mind could spark the beginnings of a revolution of enthusiasts creating their own cases with relative ease by simply modeling what ever their heart desires.

I'll do my best to keep this thread updated as things progress, but ta-ta for now!
