Help with budget Modular PSU

Bob Jim

Due to the positioning of the PSU in my M-ITX sized case, my PSU HAS to be modular; I don't want a nest of cables sitting where I will be able to see them. It does not matter if it is semi or fully modular. It needs to be as cheap as possible (UK), while still being decent. I have found the Fractal Design 550W Integra M PSU; it's 650W variant got some good reviews, but I have not found any 550W reviews.

Does anyone have any CHEAP PSU reccomendations.

What's your max budget for this PSU?

I've done some research, the PSU was made by ATNG which from some research seems to used to be good 2 years ago and anything from like 2007-2013 to be a decent PSU but I can't seem to find anything on them from now. I personally wouldn't get it as there is probably a much better PSU in today's world then one from a company I never even heard of.

@Bob Jim I've gotta go to bed, it's almost 4 a.m, http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220gs0650v1 I seen the price and it was $80. Id personally get this for $80, if this doesn't work I'll check back in about 6 hours when I wake up.

Sorry, I had to go walk my dog. I think I will go with the EVGA SuperNOVA GS 550W 80+ Gold Fully Modular PSU. Thanks for the help!

If you still want a second opinion, the Corsair CX series has modular versions. Have been using those for years now. Very happy with them.

Are they actually OK? I would go with them, but the amount of negative things said about them I get worried. People claim they die at 30C, have horrible quality, etc. Have you experienced any of this? Everyone says that they're crap, but Johnny GURU gave them a 9/10, so I dunno...

I have 6 different CX PSUs going for anywhere between 1 and 4-ish years now. The ones in my desktop and server have been modified with a Noctua NF-F12 to improve acoustics (well, make it absolutely inaudible, the OEM acoustics are not that bad). To give you an idea of the quality: the one in my desktop had an issue AFTER I modified it, my fan didn't always spin, but that was my own fault. Because of the fan not spinning it could overheat during gaming. Instead of outright failing, when it reaches a specific temperature, it shuts off and protects itself (and the system connected to it) from failing. I've had that happen over ten times and at those times the PSU was so hot the I couldn't touch it without burning myself. Yet, the PSU doesn't give a damn and still functions perfectly after 4-ish years. (I've fixed the fan issue by now ;) )

So, in my experience, they're damn good PSUs for the money. All 6 are still going strong, even after being mistreated and overheated multiple times in a row. They've never given me any power spikes or damaged any componenets connected to them, and they're backed by Corsair's awesome customer support.

He gave them a 9/10 because he grades things on value which he really shouldn't do....

You're fine with that Fractal, that's a good PSU. Just don't put really high-end hardware in it (R9 390 and i7 4790k for example)

I presume an I5 4460 and an R9 380 ITX Compact would work fine with that then, thank you! :)

@Bob Jim My internet is really bad where I am so it's gonna take forever to post this and also quoting isn't working...

Yeah, that will be fine your system.

@AliveGhost13 They're fine for *basic* builds like pretty much any Intel CPU and a low power GPU like a 960 but you shouldn't be doing heavy overclocking on them nor should you be using a hotter GPU (970/390) or any AMD FX CPU with it.
