Folding rig recommendation

Guest Johnny5g
Go to solution Solved by Guest Johnny5g,

It will not be good for gaming, and it will EAT power... so beware...

make sure to get the 8320e... it is slowert then the 8320, but it is a 95w CPU, rather then 125w

ok thanks!

I am curious though, do you plan to build a reasonable general purpose rig and fold on that, or do you have enough money laying around to make an investment in a single-purpose PC? Computer hardware depreciates fast, so it's not really a great investment unless you have multiple times that saved up, or a good source of income and can afford the luxury since it's not even doing anything for you as a tool, you are letting someone else use it for a good cause.

it would only be for folding.

Ok, you should probably do your own research to make sure a celeron wouldn't hold the GPUs back, but for $30-$40 as long as it does that and runs linux (better for folding anyway I think), then it will be adequate. Maybe check out those test benches for mining that hold like 6 GPUs.

CPU:  Intel i7-4790K      Cooler:  Noctua NH-D14     GPU: ZOTAC GTX 1070 TI MINI     Motherboard:  ASUS Z97 Gryphon     RAM:  32GB G Skill Trident X

Storage: 2x 512GB Samsung 850 EVO (RAID 0) / 2TB Seagate Barracuda     PSU: 850W EVGA SuperNova G2     Case: Fractal Design Node 804

I want to get in to folding and my parents don't want to spend a ton of money. Can anyone please give me a a list of parts around $1000 USD but it is not fixed I think $1200 max. Thanks!

I don't want to be rude, but why should your parents pay for that you "want to get into folding". Sure, folding is for a good cause, but that's just not right and 1000-1200 USD isn't exactly small change either.

I wouldn't protest if you work and save up own money for the project, but having your parents pay for it.. just, no....

Depending of how much power costs you can get some used systems with dual quad core xeon's(e5345's or equ) for about 200 used with ram and drives. Get a rack of 5 and thats unbeatable for cpu preformance for the price. Only problem with that is that folding would you about 2000W all the time. you can feel the heat from those suckers.

He is only 11 years old according to his profile. At that stage i would consider this a good investment

as an opportunity for him to learn and get engaged in something like this. Parents spend more money

on their kids for things that are alot more pointless than folding, and basically boils down to

fun/entertainment. This seems pretty sensible to me, and i don't see anything morally wrong here.

Just for folding or for games as well?

This is pretty much a FOLDING ONLY pc, it would do terribly at games due to lack of processing power and memory, not to mention the small storage space... less cpu intensive games it would do fine but yeah

that psu is over fucking priced dude...

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220gs0550v1 REALLY???? THE NAME REEKS OF RIPOFF

OFF TOPIC: I suggest every poll from now on to have "**CK EA" option instead of "Other"

Do you guys think a Dual GTX 970 setup would be better for under $1000?  Having them individually fold would probably be around 1.4x faster than one GTX 980ti.  No need to consider SLI scaling if you're just folding.

Asking this for future reference.
