For gaming and raw performance wise, which CPU is better?

Technically FX-6300 is better for raw performance, but for gaming:

Simple conclusions - Why Intel i3/i5 are better for gaming then competing AMD FX:

 

- Generally better gaming performance (see below)

- Lower power consumption

- Lower heat output, heat output that the stock cooler can actually handle, eliminating the need for an aftermarket cooler for a quiet PC

- Upgradability: Buy an i3 now and upgrade to a massively more powerful i7 later while keeping the same motherboard. Buy an FX8 now, and be stuck with it until next mobo upgrade

- Greater motherboard selection, no need for fancy VRMs (see below)

- More modern technologies: PCIe 3.0, native USB 3.0/3.1, on-die integrated graphics (in case of GPU failure, can keep using your PC), etc

 

- Better IPC: Every MHz does more with Intel.

 

More cores does not mean better, if you can't use all of them. Intel cores are not twice as powerful as FX cores (given at stock), but if you can only use half of the cores on your FX then what's the point of having so many?

 

And before people think it, there is no bias here, I am an AMD CPU user. I don't regret my purchase because I did it back in the day when AMD was still highly competitive with Intel's first-gen Core-i CPUs, but here today, I'm just giving cold hard facts.

If you note in some of these benchmarks, sometimes FX4 is actually ahead of FX6, because it is running at a higher frequency on each of the cores. These are examples of poor multi-threaded optimization in games. Many AAA titles still can't use more then 4 cores, so 4 FX cores at 3.8GHz is better then 6 FX cores at 3.5GHz.

 

VRMs - what are they and why are they important:

 

When talking about AM3+ boards you'll often hear the term VRMs. These are Voltage Regulation Modules, they are what turn the PSU's 12V into the ~1.4V (FX) your CPU will take. So the higher the power draw of your CPU, the more work the VRMs have to do. On Intel boards this isn't a big deal because at stock speeds you won't see more then 88W of CPU TDP, but you can't trust these same VRMs with the 125W FX chips. Overloading motherboard VRMs can actually lead to them burning out, causing a dead motherboard and possibly a fire hazard.

People think that FX is cheaper, and therefore is better for the money, and they'd be willing to make that sacrifice in performance for a bit of sacrifice in cost, but in reality, the difference is negligible. Take a look at these comparisons. Again this continues on the fact that you'll want a board with good VRMs for reliability on AM3+, while it's pretty much whatever with locked Intel chips. For this reason we'll be comparing using probably the best "cheap" AM3+ board, the Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P, with it's 8+2 phase VRMs, compared to a budget Intel H97 board.

$17 more for the i5, for much higher performance and pretty much zero bottleneck with any single GPU in any game, as opposed to the struggling FX...

 

Cooler

 

Do note that these builds are NOT with an aftermarket cooler. While the stock Intel coolers are fine for their accompanying chips, the coolers bundled with 125W FX chips aren't really up to the job, and can become VERY loud under load. If you want a quiet PC you'll want to invest in an aftermarket cooler. The cheapest one worth buying to quiet down an FX chip is the Zalman CNPS5X, which is $17.

Around the world the price differences do change and often the gap grows but there is never a point where the Intel option is "overpriced" compared to Intel, considering the performance you get.

 

For gaming and raw performance wise, which CPU is better?

My i5 6500 is bad and can't even maintain 4.5ghz, and 4.4ghz causes it to slowly become unstable over weeks with a vcore of 1.395. FML

Depends on what types of programs you will be running, i3 will be much, much, better in single core applications, but they should be fairly similar in multi-threaded gaming.

Youre living in 2005 or something? Most games support 4 or more cores but I prefer i3 if  gaming

For gaming and raw performance wise, which CPU is better?

FX-6300 is better for modern games but i3 has better IPC... In Witcher 3 the 6300 got a few more FPS more than a 4th gen i3 so a 6350 will get a bit more...

 

But like I wrote old games and indie games it may suffer from poor performance in per core and IPC... :P

 

Overall if you plan not to upgrade later go for FX if you will upgrade go for Pentium or i3...

My i5 6500 is bad and can't even maintain 4.5ghz, and 4.4ghz causes it to slowly become unstable over weeks with a vcore of 1.395. FML

Yea in my case 6300 since I take advantage of all the cores and the games I play also do but it seems game devs still don't take advantage of more cores like we thought they would by now. Win loose and imo bad time to buy anything new due to upcoming CPUs, used or otherwise is a different story. All I hope is the new AMD CPUs are competitive enough cause if not it is bad news for everyone.

The FX line has a very specific and niche use case scenario which the OP is not asking about. You don't buy an FX 6300 purely for gaming when its not that good an option compared to the alternatives, and when its never been that good for gaming outside of Battlefield 4 and Hardline.

For gaming itself the i3 for sure, the only reason why I choose my fx 6300 when I did was since gaming wasn't my primary purpose of my rig and at the time it was either a low end i3 or the 6300 which I got an amazing deal on

Its a draw in Witcher 3 against i3 and Cities Skyline loves using all 8 cores on my FX! :P

Its a draw in Witcher 3 against i3 and Cities Skyline loves using all 8 cores on my FX! :P

Sure I get what you are saying but with DX12 around the corner it may be a better pick. (like I said MAY and he attacks me always! :()

Also I did say both options was good cause Pentium/i3 has upgrade path DUH!!!

As for Directx 12. That's a rumour. We have no idea what the impact is going to be. I'd like what you're saying to be true -- I could hold of upgrading for many years -- but right now it's a hell of a gamble.

 

All of the communication so far is about lower CPU overhead. That seems to be the only concrete information given to us. In which case that will benefit the i3 every bit as much as the FX.

Yep. I plan on moving to a Xeon later on when DX12 comes out and the hyperthreaded quad core would benefit.

The Witcher 3 is pretty popular. I refuse to pay £50 for a single game, though, so I'm waiting for it to reach a sane price.

 

Even if The Witcher 3 and Cities Skylines legitimately benefit from 8 cores, that brings the total number of games that do up to two. Is Witcher 3 even CPU bound on a quad core? It seems much more graphically intensive from what I've seen.

 

It's similar to Thief. Thief uses six cores really well. Does it ever need a hex core? Not remotely. Even on a dual core Pentium its minimum fps is in the 40s, and its average fps is 80 which is only marginally less than with a 4690k.

Not to mention valve is damn good at optimization! (not checked but my FX+970+Ubuntu gets same FPS as a i7+980+Windows on CS:GO unless we maxed it lol...)

 

Oh and even Unreal Tournament 3 actually does I checked! :D (Amazing that that old game that even promote Core2Duo does huh?)

So its safe to bet that all Unreal Engine games has some kinda multi-core support up to 8-cores but that is if devs decide to do so... :P

Oh that reminds me that Ark Survival Evolved(unreal engine game) actually seems to use 8 cores/treads also! :P (am I lucky on games I have or something?)

Oh that reminds me that Ark Survival Evolved(unreal engine game) actually seems to use 8 cores/treads also! :P (am I lucky on games I have or something?)

 

I know those games support six cores, I've not seen verification that they support 8.

 

Even if we assume they do, FX only becomes good value if you only play games that use the Unreal Engine.
