Workstation help.

lol@um8

I need to build a workstation to run Ansys, Solidworks, Catia, ProE, Creo to do Structural analysis, CFD analysis and 3D modelling on a budget. Gaming is not a priority but I'll occasionally do some light gaming.

First off, I do not live in the USA so I'll quote the total cost for the components in my country.

Second, if the computer can run Ansys, then it can run the other softwares too. FYI, Ansys basically lives and breathes off as many threads as it can take. It also loves lots of RAM, fast RAM and high memory bandwidth/channels.

Third, I have a crappy 900p monitor.

Here are the builds I came up with to fit my budget.

Option 1: (includes GPU and a monitor)

Processor - Intel Xeon E3 1246 v3 (has on-board graphics.)

Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212X

Motherboard - Asus H97 Pro Gamer

RAM - Gskill Ripjaws 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3

GPU - Asus GTX 960 2GB

PSU - Seasonic M12II-620W Evo

HDD - WD Caviar Blue 1TB

Case - NZXT S340

Monitor - Dell P2414H

Total cost - 89k

Option 2: (includes only GPU. No monitor.)

Processor - Intel Xeon E5 1620 v3 (no on-board graphics)

Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212X

Motherboard - Asus X99-A

RAM - Gskill Ripjaws 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4

GPU -  Asus GTX 960 2GB

PSU - Seasonic M12II-620W Evo

HDD - WD Caviar Blue 1TB

Case - NZXT S340

Total cost - 90.5k

Option 3: Wait for Skylake, buy an i7, hope and pray that Iris Pro Graphics are actually good and buy a monitor instead of a GPU.

If I choose option 1, I give up performance benefits that come with X99 and the higher memory bandwidth and speeds but I can play.  :P

If I choose option 2, I have to keep looking at this godforsaken monitor.

If I choose option 3, I may/may not have the time to wait for Skylake to be available in my country.

Help?  :)

Given that both the Xeons are 4 cores + HT i would go with option 1 over option 2.

You are going to do much work in front of the screen and you get a good screen and a god system for the money.

Get a workstation gpu especially if you use solidworks and and look into the quadro or firepro line

Also get a workstation board not a consumer version

What are good firepros? (a serious question)

Preferably not that expensive while still competing with a quadro (not that expensive for a workstation card means around a titan x imo).

AMD's versions of quadros aka, cards dedicated to work loads.

I would not even touch that PSU! D:

CM V650S, 650W PSU is a better option but it may cost a bit more...

The Seasonic M12II Evo series is a well regarded model line. I am not sure that Seasonic is even capable of building a bad psu.

Unlike most of their other models, the Cooler Master V series is generally well regarded. But without an actual model number it is difficult to comment on the suggested psu.

No? Seasonic PSU's are the best out in the market

Seasonic is one of the best psu manufacturers. They build some excellent units. But there are other manufacturers that do as good a job.

both are expensive unfortunately I have no idea where you live, however if you are doing work exclusivly the cost is well  worth it for the driver support, stability and compatibility.

I would look into with one works best with the programs you use (sorry I am busy and cant do it myself) Firepros and quadros are like the consumer versions each one works well with diffrent specific applications specifically opencl (firepro) or cuda (quadro).

Oh man. I could only find one workstation board within my budget and that too LGA2011-3. I'll look around for more boards. Xeon's don't like consumer boards?

And the Quadro I could afford is the K620 which is GDDR3. So, yeah.

A question for all, I am leaning towards buying Option 1. Do you guys feel I am investing into dead technology if I am buying LGA1150 and with DDR3 is being phased out?

Yeah xeons will work but it depends on bios support and if you can't afford a quadro that's fine maybe a later investment should you need it

Xeons have no problems working in consumer boards. (A number of X99 consumer boards will support ECC memory when a Xeon is installed.)

There is little point going with a "workstation" if this is a stand alone system that will not have a number of gpu installed. Unless more than 64GB of memory is contemplated. Or ECC memory is required.

Nothing wrong with Option 1. I would suggest going with the E3-1241 V3 or E3-1231 V3 cpu and getting a decent gpu. A workstation gpu makes sense for Solidworks, but it would essentially mean no gaming.

If budget has to be found, consider Asus H97M-E/CSM or Asus H97-PLUS instead of the H97-Pro Gamer. The first would allow for less expensive case like the Cooler Master N200. (Presuming pricing relationships are similar to the US.)

Ok. I'll check Asus's website for compatibility before I buy.

I started my build with the same CPU and motherboards you suggested, but my savings were not that significant to buy a GTX 970 or a Quadro. So I went with the next best / better looking thing. Although, I could buy the R9 380 with those savings.
