PS4 getting a unique mouse and keyboard combo

Recently it was revealed that the PS4 is getting its own mouse and keyboard called the " Tactical Assault Commander "

 

 

 

The mouse looks pretty nice however the keyboard seems extremely small. It does have some extra keys for mapping and even a dedicated walk button for some odd reason. Not sure why Sony decided to make a mouse and keyboard accessory for the PS4 but maybe its for players who want to play better in FPS's which is the most likely reason for this.

 

And the price for this bad boy is a whopping 120$

 

Personally I would rather have my own keyboard and mouse to use with the PS4 because more buttons for me and plus it's free. I wouldn't mind purchasing an PS4 adapter for mouse and keyboard however something like this wouldn't be very helpful except in games as you can see, because it isn't even a full keyboard. The biggest question is how are console users going to use this on the couch ?

 

What are your thoughts about this ?

 

Also its pretty useless in my mind not even compatible with a real computer, the mouse seems to be great I like the grip and the way it looks but seriously this seems to be a waste in my mind. It will also be usable for the PS3

The sheer volume of keys is what gives it such a huge advantage, reducing the number of keys to the same, if not less, than a controller is just NOT how to do it. honestly, I see no reason for it, other than as an excuse to use a mouse.

I always thought the main reason for using a mouse and keyboard was for better precision, not more keys. That's why I prefer mouse and keyboard anyways.

if it was a full KB devs still wouldn't bother adding functionality to the extra keys.

I will never truly understand why so many people love keyboard/mouse and think controllers are the devil. I play almost every PC game with a controller because I like the full control over my characters speed and haptic feedback. Some games allow you to press extra buttons to walk but some don't. Like what if I just want to fucking walk and not jog everywhere? Say that though and a ton of nerds line up to publicly castrate me. 

 

But good for console gamers. This will give them a huge edge in FPS online titles.

This is indeed true.  Basically there needs to be an analog thumb stick for the thumb instead of having it on space.

 

Why? (..."what about jump", you may ask...)

 

When you assign your thumb to the thumbstick for movement, you are now freeing 3 fingers for other actions.  So, instead of 3 fingers for W,A,S,D movement, you reassign movement to a single thumb.  You can use any one of the 3 fingers for jump now (preferably the middle finger).  Your index finger can rest on melee attack while your ring finger can rest on grenade or action.

 

Remember, the index finger is ALWAYS on the melee key, for example.  So the advantage here is if you have melee normally assigned to let's say "F" key, then there might be a split-second situation where you need to not only strafe right, but also melee at the same time.  If you have to take your index finger off "D" for right strafe and press "F", you may not get that split-second, perfected strafe+melee kill in any given moment.

 

Finally, to the original comment in this quote, you could gain the advantage of moving slow or fast depending on how far the analog stick is pressed.  There are times where you want to peek merely a few pixels around a corner.  Instead of "jolting" out by walking at full speed by tapping "D" and "A" fast, you can do the most gradual of peeks by ever-so softly pressing on the analog thumb stick, assuming analog input movement is supported.

I use the XIM4 for playing Halo. Its so nice, however I played Halo Reach which is 30fps and it hurt my eyes and aiming.

My educated guess would be that Sony wants to avoid people from using their own keyboard and gain extra advantage in games because people will use different keyboards that has different extra functionality? Thats why we dont really see compatible controllers besides the official one with different keys or layouts in the market. Keeping everything at the same playing level.

Either that shows that this peripheral is over-priced or the console is severely under-priced due to the very slow hardware inside.  E.g. the guts of the PS4 are worth not much more than a keyboard/mouse combo.

 

Or perhaps it is a little bit of Column A and a little bit of Column B.

it depends on the game. but I do not like FPS' with controllers. I'm very picky about the camera movements. it is especially annoying when my stick gets old (couple of months, tops) and it begins to move on its own. other than FPS games I dont see why using a controller is "the devil". hyperbolic though, isn't it?

 

3rd person shooters are another story. I'll play the shit out of that with a control. just don't give me a scoped weapon
