I Just Finished Metal Gear Solid 4 and I'm Crying (Spoilers)

Guest

As a late comer to one of the most iconic video game franchises on history I have played all except for the first. But as I saw 6 A.M. this morning and realized I had stayed up the entire night finishing one of the crowning achievements in video games and as Big Boss said his final words I couldn't help but weep. Seeing a man who, along with comrades was consumed in a madness that eventually enveloped the whole world in endless war, kill his once friend turned hated enemy, finally connect with Solid Snake, and die on his mother's grave was simply too engrossing and beautiful a moment in video game history to ignore.

To at first not like the series as it was just another white guy causing trouble in the world, but then seeing the enormous tragedy and the transfiguration of the human condition into polygonal form in MGS3 by finally seeing the sacrifice that The Boss made for her country, her friends, herson and finally the entirety of MGS4 as you see Solid Snake tortured until the very end, leads me to believe that this is simply one of the best series I have ever played and an enormous contribution to art and a reflection of the human condition.

As Jeff Haynes, who reviewed the game for IGN said in his video review, "Legends die hard, and deserve a heroic story that lives on when they're gone. Metal Gear Solid 4 is such an ending for a legendary warrior like Solid Snake. Not only does is sum up the entire story of Metal Gear, it's depth and complexity couples with it's technical prowess make it one of the best games of this year and, indeed, one the best games of all time. Get some well earned rest snake, you deserve it, we salute you".

It was my favorite until I played the fourth, however the fourth is simply a great refinement in terms of gameplay and story pacing.

Personally I thought 4s pacing suffered over 3 due to time spent in exposition, they didn't really fit in the story, more like "exposition breaks" mgs3 has some, but they felt more cohesive and more natural

I also felt mgs4 has on average the worst bosses in the series, especially with thier story, just delivered by drebin's bed time stories

I felt the gameplay was a step down due to it turning more into a third person shooter, which has only been made worse with mgsv, not to say it doesn't look amazing.

SNIP.

Agree with you

MGS is one of (if not my number one) favourite gaming franchise ever

and MGS4 is a perfect masterpiece of storytelling and gameplay, many people say 3 is their favourite but I honestly think 4 is one of the best video games that has ever been made and yet to be surpassed

A lot of people were not happy with the amount of cutscenes and how they oftentimes felt that they were interrupting the actual playing of the game and I can see that. However in trying to rap up a series as convoluted as Metal Gear in one game, with as many villains, cohorts, and side characters as it does, I think I could give them a pass for the sheer amount of storytelling they had to do in order to ensure that the series made sense and ended it with dignity and satisfaction.

As a long time MG fan ya...I perfer MGS3 to 4 but 4s was an incredibly powerful endding.

I hope the series can rest in peace after MGS5 with kojimas likely departure :(

The problem wasn't that there were cutscenes, it was that the cutscenes were rambling incoherent messes with no care for pacing or relevance for what's on screen. Drebin's bed time stories were some of the laziest and most poorly delivered back story I've seen in a video game. It made the bosses overall feel even worse than they already did, being the worst collection of bosses in the whole series

They were the worse bosses and yes Drebin's telling was boring, along with the constant interruptions of calls from people. However, IMO, I think it simply was one of the best games of the past ten years and has, overall, one of the best stories I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing.
