PC hard-freezes after playing games for 10-30 minutes

Go to solution Solved by TechHarry,

you could also try doing a system restore since I think that your log shows a corrupted windows update (I'm no expert on reading logs). If a system restore doesn't work a system repair from a disc or memory stick containing windows might do it.

You said that your graphics card has been added recently, what power supply (model and wattage) are you using? and are you using all of the pci power connectors?

Everything started when I alt+tabbed from witcher 3 during a cutscene which caused my whole computer to freeze and repeat the same sound rapidly. The computer didn't respond to any ctrl alt del or other commands so I had to force shutdown using the power button. After that I have started to experience similar freezes in many other games after playing for 10-30 minutes, even in games that aren't really demanding. Whenever the pc freezes, the display shows some random solid colour like grey or blue and continues to repeat the last sound played before the freeze, and the freeze doesn't lead to a BSOD but the pc simply becomes unresponsive. The games have freezed a couple of times when alt+tabbing but also while just playing the game.

I tried updating/reinstalling my gpu drivers (clean install) and some other drivers from my computers manufacturers site (http://www.acer.fi/ac/fi/FI/content/drivers) many times, but it didn't solve the problem. I also tried reinstalling my gpu completely from device manager but it didn't help. Most of the similar problems I found by googling were related to overheating issues, but I doubt that is the case for me, as the crashes appear in low demanding games like Trove too, and I couldn't get my pc to freeze by running gpu and cpu benchmarks and stresstests with msi kombustor, and the temperatures rose to about 60 degrees celsius at max. I also tried running avg antivirus scan, but it found no viruses. I tried running cmd with sfc /scannow, and it said that it found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. It also gave me the path to the log file of the scan (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log) but I don't have the expertise to understand the log file. If you want you can download the log file from my drive here (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8jMf0H0rbG0T1F2TXlsZTFXNEU/view?usp=sharing). I tried copy pasting the text into pastebin and google docs but they crashed because the text was too long, also the log file was too big to add to the file attachments of this post =/.

Updating and reinstalling drivers fixed some problems that started after the first crash, like shadow of mordor crashing in the main menu and many fullscreen games crashing the game application after alt tabbing and closing a browser window. So the problem might be related to running the games in fullscreen, but I haven't tried playing windowed for longer periods yet.

My pc is an acer aspire M3920 with a recently bought gtx960 strix version gpu. Specs are available here in this speccy snapshot: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/5QtNRrkbVd615niArYaUfSB

To clarify, these problems started after my pc froze while alt tabbing from witcher 3 and I have not had these problems prior to that.

check your temps

check the CPU and GPU temps and usage

sounds like a system hang, like a blue screen but without the stop code (so the system doesn't reboot). A common cause of this when gaming is a bad overclock, but it could be any number of other things.

To start with is your system overclocked? cpu or/and GPU

If yes to cpu, boot into the bios and push f5 to load optimised defaults and see if the issue still occurs.

If yes to gpu, go into whatever software you are using (evga precision x, msi afterburner) and reset back to stock clockspeeds and voltages.

If neither of these things check your RAM timings and speeds to see that they are running at their rated speeds, try running them below rated speeds.

Try running memtestx86 overnight and see if any errors are detected.
