AMD acknowledges 390 series crashes, looking into it

zMeul

source: https://community.amd.com/thread/183430

Just to let you know we're aware and are investigating this particular crashing issue with the 390 cards. As soon as i have a further update on the issue, I'll let you all know.

---

apparently this isn't limited to a single game (GTA5)
the TDR is a tough error to diagnose since it can have a few sources, from a defective graphics card to a software (driver) problem
this isn't limited to AMD too, nVidia had recently acknowledged such a issue with their products

---

approaches diagnosing this:

  • use DDU to clean the drivers and revert to a previous driver set
  • try the card on a different system; try a clean OS install
  • turn off any HW monitoring software
  • one tool you can use is TDR Manipulator and turn TDR off - but, if you're still experiencing issues, that can be caused by a defective video card
  • try downclocking GPU and VRAM frq and see if it stabilizes; try 100Hz increments and then fine tune with 10/1Hz to find the threshold

Who wants to bet that the memory of the 290/290X was overclocked too far.

yah. Something has me owrried this is a hardware problem. Since it is just a dumbass rebrand, it would be hard to imagine the drivers aren't ironed out...since they are the same fucking cards as last time...

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Forgive my ignorance, but what is this error?

to put it simple, the system sends a request to the video card, if the video card takes more than 2 seconds to respond (I think it's the default response time), the OS will reset the video card driver

I hope it isn't a defect. Would be bad news for amd. Because the 3xx rebrands are already a disaster sorta.

Now before this becomes a flame war, I'm out

Abandon before "namek" explodes.

Sucks for AMD this bad news means lower sales = another nail in their coffin. They are doing so bad this should have not happened.

meh.. must be a driver issue (just like Nvidia's... thank god they released a hotfix)

AMD's not stupid enough to release a broken product

You never know.

Anyway, the 390 series is an OC-ed version of last year's cards with more RAM. It could just be that some cards can't OC that much, and AMD never checked them. Or it's just a driver issue. I hope it's the latter, even though the 300 series is bad and AMD kinda deserves whatever's coming at them.

Who wants to bet that the memory of the 290/290X was overclocked too far.

From what I heard, AMD changed the memory chips in the 390 series with better ones, thus allowing them to OC as they do.(might be wrong though...gonna search and edit)

Also, since nVidia encountered it too, I guess it is a software related problem.

We'll wait and see.

I thought they used better ram chips for the 390s? like higher rated ones

what is there to be biased against when the 3xx is just rebrands, in 390 series case it's 290 (X) with higher clocks and more VRAM - out of the box defects are not out of the question since 2xx was already plagued with significant DOAs

All the hate when Nvidia had problems too, clearly states so in the article.

Also less power usage, it's more of a refresh. You can name it however you want though.
