It depends...

Mostly no, but if you have games running on normal from this year, especially fps games, then around that, yes.

No reason not to, just certain games it won't be able to. On lower demanding games where it matters like CS:GO yes but people say they can notice the difference between 60-75 some guess it's worth it.

Get it and if you find it lacking in fps, get a 2nd 980 Ti.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!

The beauty of Gsync is that even if you don't get a constant 144Hz, you still get smooth gameplay. 980ti should be able to pump out over 60FPS on pretty much every game at that resolution, but for particularly demanding/poorly optimized ones you may need to lower the settings a bit if you find your framerate to be unsatisfactory.

Even after being spoiled by 144Hz and thinking 60Hz sucks, I don't really notice during gameplay. After ~90 fps the returns diminish severely, not even close to the jump from 30-60 or 60-90. It also depends on the game. Some games will look fine at lower framerates than others.

Source: I have a 980ti and a 144Hz 1440p gsync monitor.

I play Dirty Bomb, which is almost as light as CS:GO, and I noticed a massive difference when going from 144fps, to 90fps.

For whatever reason, my GPU decided not to clock up, and I needed to reboot to fix it. But it's hard to describe how it looked. I have G-Sync enabled, so there wasn't any tearing or anything, it just didn't look as fluid. Had I not started playing at 144fps, I probably wouldn't have noticed a difference. Game was still very playable, it just looked so weird!!!

No single GPU setup is going to run all games over 144FPS at 1440P. You will need a second GPU or to turn down your graphics but at the end of the day most gamers with high refresh rate displays aren't running their games at the maximum refresh anyways.
