The new one doesn't and still takes a glacial 45 seconds.

Its also not all about boot times.  Its about seq. reads and writes......

Well Linus' 2012 rig had a raid card that needed to initialize before the boot could be complete.

well, but now he has a pcie ssd and still needs 45 secs

Something doesn't seem right here... 

He is also running windows 10 preview so I'm sure there will be an improvement on Wednesday when the full version is released.

10240 is technically the RTM version that ships on Wednesday, of course there could be a "day one update".

Linus timed his boot time from the moment he hit that power button to the moment it showed the lock screen and that took 45 seconds. If it was timed when the desktop and all start up programs are loaded, it might have taken a bit longer. To speed up the boot time, you'll have to go into the bios and disable uncessary componenets, set your OS as primary boot, and set a lower delay time out. Doing that and it should speed up the boot time. Time it took for my X99, from pressing power button to all start up programs loaded is around 45 seconds. Cannot enable fastboot because my gpu HD5850 don't have GOP support. There is a free program call Bootracer, that can time how fast your computer boots.

I'm not concerned with my boot time, I was simply explaining that X99 takes longer to boot than Z97 or any other non-enthusiast grade platform. I have no idea how long my system takes to boot, I already set my delay and fastboot with all my systems hopefully your post helps someone out that doesn't go into the BIOS much.

So a question, then, about the rack mount rig. Are you planning to water cool it as well in the rack?

And good selection on working with Protocase as well. I worked with them on a previous project (that I still need to finish actually) and it was a breeze. I also like their designer software. It made designing the rack case I ordered very simple, especially the cutout library they have with it.

Good point about watercooling.  I hope he watercools and overclocks is PC in the rack.

 

Do you have a build log thread of your rack?  I love seeing racks!!!!

This may be stupid but did you try the MemOK button? I thought that would make the system post if there was a memory issue like XMP enabled? I'm assuming you don't need support, but a normal person wouldn't have a spare 5690x to swap with... :D

Who cares about water cooling. If Linus' PC and his wife's PC are not married, the two PC's will be living in sin if they are in the same rack together. :P

 Do you plan on releasing technical drawing of the case you designed? I would love to see them, and may want to redraw them in Autodesk Inventor to practice a bit before I design one for myself.

@LinusTech can you provide a download for the sketchup model as some members me included would like to replicate it. Obviously not exactly but I would love to put my current and soon to be new computer in 3U of 4U racks and mount them in my closet with a vent and fan traveling outside. This way it can be completely silent and it looks cool and stays cool. Thanks!
