Best Digital Camera under $500?

What is the best digital camera I can get for that price limit? I'm going to be using it for photography class. (Probably a dSLR)

I just got myself a Nikon D5200 with a 18-55 VRII kitlens. I got the 5200 over the 3300 mostly because I'm going to Gamescom and the flip-out display really appeals to me. But I'm not sure if that 500 *currency* includes or excludes things like SD card, carrying case, extra battery's, etc.. So the 5200 might be a bit to expensive. If it's not, that could also be a valid option imho
