[GUIDE] Change/Remove Forgotten Windows Password

Welcome to my FIRST ever guide :D

In this guide I will show you how to Change/Remove your Windows password in case you lost it! I don't know if there is any other guide showing you how to reset your password, I'm doing this because I see alot of people saying they lost they're password, so I decided to do this guide!

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS ONLY TO HELP YOU RECOVER YOUR PASSWORD, IT'S NOT A GUIDE ON HOW TO CRACK A WINDOWS PASSWORD! I'M ALSO NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE OCCURED TO YOU OR YOUR PC OR ANY DATA ON IT!

If you're running Windows XP or Vista, any EFS encrypted file will be UNREADABLE, and won't be recoverable unless you remeber the old Password!

I don't know if this method works with windows 8 or newer, if it does than please PM me! :D

Things you will need:

  • Hiren's Boot CD
  • A CD/DVD OR a USB Flash Drive (512mb or greater)(which is capable to be used as a boot  device)
  • A Bruning programm for the CD/DVD - I suggest CDBurnerXP
  • Grub4Dos for the USB Flash Drive or Rufus-2.2 - Thanks to @Rohith_Kumar_Sp for suggestin' it :D
  • The Computer you want to Remove the Password

Burning the CD (Using CDBurnerXP)

After you downloaded Hiren's Boot CD from the link above, insert the CD/DVD in your drive and follow the steps:

DDmPayu.png

Choose "Burn ISO Image" and clikc "OK"

O09siN5.png

Now click on "Browse" (in this case "Durchsuchen") search for the .iso file and click "Burn Disc" (in this case "Medium Brennen") (no my name is NOT Fernando :P)

Installing Hiren's on a USB Flash Drive (You will still need a CD because you'll need to copy the files from there to the USB*) (I also didn't test this method, so if it works could you please PM me? Thanks :D)

First, you will need to Format your USB Flash Drive using the FAT format (CAUTION: THIS WILL EREASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR USB FLASH DRIVE)

Now you will need Grub4Dos. Extract the Zip on your desktop (easier to access).

You should see a folder named "grub4dos" open it and execute "grubinst_gui.exe" Follow steps on Image:

X4LjcUL.png

A CMD window like this should pop up:

Q8xzbxc.png

Now you have to copy everything from the CD to the USB. Go into the folder "HBCD" and copy "grldr" and "menu.lst"

*if someone could see if these files are in the .iso (in the .rar file), please PM me, I lost the .rar file and It would take a while to download

In order to be able to use Hiren's, you'll need to change the boot order. To do so, you will have to access the BIOS, depending on the motherboard you will either have to press "F2", "F9", "F12" or "Del"

Depending on which method you chose, you will have to set the DVD Drive as first or the USB Flash Drive as first.

To do so, go into "Boot", there should be a list with bootable devices, select the first one and change it to the device you want to boot from. After that Save and Exit.

NOTE: If the USB Flash Drive isn't visible, please make clear it's plugged in, You should plug it in the rear USB 2.0 ports (Because of compatiblity problems that may occur when using usb 3.0/3.1)

EDIT: On some motherboards it's not necessary to change the Boot Order. Some allow you to select the drive you want to boot from

Great, now that you did that you should be greeted by this:

ibtUBMp.png

1. Ok, now navigate to "Offline NT/2000/XP/Vista/7 Password Changer" and hit "Enter"

wL6J5Gi.jpg

2. Linux files are loading

3. Choose the Correct Hard Drive Partition

4. Confirm Windows Registery Path (Basically Press "Enter")

5. Choose the Password reset option (Which should be "1", hit "Enter")

6. Choose "Edit user data and Password" (Should be "1", hit "Enter")

7. Enter the Username to edit (and press "Enter")

10. Press "q" (press "Enter") to quit Offline NT Password and Registery Editor

CMvew16.jpg

11. Type "y" and then press "Enter" to Confirm Password Reset Changes

Qk77gAC.jpg

12. Confirm that you've finished using the Offline NT Password and Registery Tool by pressing "Enter"

3FYnuBM.jpg

13. Remove Hiren's Boot CD and Restart your Computer

Source: Hirensbootcd.org

Ok, now that you successfully done that, go back in to the BIOS (by pressing either "F2", "F9", "F12" or "DEL") and go to the "Boot" option and change the boot order back to normal (Basically, set your Primary Hard Drive as the First Boot Device) Save changes and Exit.

STEP 5 - Enjoy :D

Now just start the PC and, voilá! It's done. If it didn't work then you might have done something wrong or the Operating System is not supported!

This took me 2-3 Hours to write, so, (and it was my first one too) any Feedback would be nice :D

If you have further question, just write them down there or PM me

There's a few different methods of removing user passwords. I faintly remember one of them involving deleting a couple of files, but I can't remember which ones.

Been ages since I forgot a Windows password (ever since PIN in Win 8 and basically having the same password as on my MS account)

i'd recommend rufus-2.2, because it allows you to format your pen drive as NTFS, because if your OEM OS is more than 4 GB you can't format it as NTFS as all the software our there only allow FAT32 and Fat32 wont copy a file is larger than 4 GB, which happened to me when i tried to copy my OEM Win 7 OS onto my 8 GB pen drive, rufus-2.2 will allow you to format NTFS as well.

I will add it later!

Though, you don't need FAT32 since the Hiren's Wont even hit 1gb, but i'll add it later :D

Yes, I know, you could boot windows into safe mode, and edit/remove the password with the CMD, though sometime it won't work.

Only bad thing I can come up with, is that the pictures are not in English (but you translated everything anyway, so that's solved).

Good job on it!

Basic guide to CPU's!

If I said I were 14, you would call me a kid. If I say 70, you’ll entitle me too old. If I say 20 you say I’m inexperienced and if I say 40 than I'm too boring.

How did you do it at school. Did you use the password reset or something else? because i have been using Hiren for a long time and can`t figure out what to do

You would have to find a PC that has the Admin account on it Where you only can choose between "Master" (here in portugal they called the Admin accounts "Master") or User)

Then you, can modify or remove the password, login in as Admin and then you can give yourself admin rights... Though I don't reccomend giving rights to your self directly since it would be very suspecious, give someone elses account admin right, and from that account give admin right to your and multiply accounts to make it look less suspicous....

Either ways, if you don't want to get in trouble, don't give your account admin rights, or don't even give an account admin rights, use the admin account!

I never told you this, mmmkay? :P

Cool I will try it after my summer holidays. I really hope it works have been trying this for 2 years so hopefully I can get it.

Problem is (at least in my school, will try it too though :P) The BIOS on some, acttualy all, is Password protected, though you can still access the BIOS you can't change anything, now I don't know you can select from which device you want to boot from, I hope it is possible (though our computer surely aren't the same as yours) or else it won't work, but Hiren's lets you remove the BIOS password too, so.

Now the biggest problem is that these computers, who have only Master and User accounts (the ones you can't enter your credentials) are in the library and at the bar (?) so doing that is almost impossible without getting spotted, and the computers have those sound thingys, so everytime you enter the wrong BIOS Password it will beep very loud :/ feck

Nice tutorial! However, I was unable to get Hiren's Boot CD to boot my laptop. It is possible because my laptop has UEFI. Eventually I got to reset my password with a Windows install DVD. Here is the tutorial I followed. I hope this will also be helpful to others.

it will work on windows 8, however only with a local account and only if secure boot is not enabled(ive done it).  i havent tried MSX though.

Hey, I am having some trouble understanding the instructions :(

I am trying to remove the admin password on an old system (dell) running windows 7. I can get into the desktop because I guessed the password but I can't do a factory reset without knowing the admin's password.

I can't use a CD as I don't have any lying around, I have a 5gb USB tho.

I formatted it to all the right settings but I don't understand what I should carry over to the USB from the Hiren's BootCD download I got from their website. PLEASE REPLY!!!

pretty please? :(

Also it gives me an error message saying

Invalid partition table, if you still want to install, use the --skip-mbr-test

You can change it to Legacy if I'm not mistaken, after you're done then switch back to UEFI.

Ah, yes

Just download the ISO file and then in Rufus choose the ISO file and your USB stick

I suggest re-downloading Hirens

I am going to make a tutorial on how to do it with rufus
