Looking at options for a 70-300mm

So I was at the track yesterday and was shooting with a Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens.

I enjoyed it greatly for trackside use, but I was wondering what potential alternatives in that zoom range their might be that I should also be looking at.

im shooting with a D7200

I have a 18-300. It covers every lens range I need, and its probably the only lens I'll ever buy from nikon until its horribly outdated.

Basically, I don't shoot for professional use, and I don't like switching lenses. so 18-300.. May be pricy, but its well worth it.

oh if you had a canon id throw many things at you right away. go a bit more in depth ill try and find something if i get the time, you looking for good aperture? id go for a f/2.8. which is holy crap expensive on Nikon's side, i was thinking around the £1000 mark but they dont agree.

yeah sorry i cant help(buy a 5D)

i have a lens like that well specs wise its a f/3.5-5.6 with a D300, its pretty good albeit a bit grainy. Needs a metric ton of light however, had to start using wireless flashes and stuff to stop the noise. got fed up and brought a 5d

I would go with the 70-200 f2.8 on your d7200 it will give you a 105 to 300 mm equivalent lens, but at f2.8 its considerable brighter which means you can use a faster shutter speed, which is super important when shooting sports

Go for the 70-200 units, much better construction and much better IQ. Even Sigmas version is very good and cheaper than the Nikon one.

Your huge lenses are what you need to invest in, they will outlast your use of the camera BUT they also retain most of their value and are very easy to sell after the fact. They're actually fairly good at retaining their value years down the line, so you can always get out with minimal losses if you decide you're not shooting much anymore.

Image quality.

Take a handful of the same focal length lenses with the same f, and some will still look better than others. Its like the whole "intangibles" thing when talking about talent, you just know side by side which lens is producing better images. Often this is due to the internal construction of the elements and how they are arranged.

Even legendary Canon L lenses give nasty aberrations and even my 50mm f/1.4 is pretty terrible compared to a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 or even Canons own 50mm f/1.8 III.

What's your budget?

From my experience the 70-300 is a good lens (for the price) that has given me pretty good results, but it really does depend on what your budge is, no point is suggesting a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 if you don't want to drop $2000.

What lenses do you current have?

If you can afford it, the Nikon 70-300 really is one of the best telephoto lenses out there (at this price range). If it worked well for you in the field then I would suggest getting one :)

Or rent/borrow one for a little while and try it out.

From what I've heard, the Nikon is the best (beating the Tamron and Sigma offers). Plus it is full frame.

Yeah the main thing you lose is IS, but having f2.8 constant aperture is awesome, this will basically be a 105 to 300 on your nikon

and if you upgrade to full frame you can take this with you

What? how will it vignette? you have an APSC camera and this is a full frame lens, there will be less than on a full frame camera

I didnt factor in the fact I have a crop sensor/didnt know it was full frame lens, I did an edit in my post though to a video showing it, tif you go forward in the time line a bit you can see the compairison to the nikkor and canon offerings but ya its quite heavy compared to them.

yeah and its easily correctable in editing, if you use lightroom you can get lens profiles too

I just figured a faster lens means faster shutter speeds and less noise, since you need fast shutter speeds when using long lenses and shooting sport

I mean I was running around with my 70-200 f4 on sunday and I really had to ram up ISO to get my shutter speed fast enough to take shots tracking people moving etc (photos at an airsoft game)
