Should I upgrade to Haswell or stay on Ivy Bridge?

If you can come across that CPU in particularly trustworthy condition for cheaper than the cost of, say, an i5 4440 and an MSI H81-E34 (chosen for no other reason than it's cheapness) then sure thing. The gains made since Ivy Bridge are basically unimportant and not worth spending money on.

So I should stay on Ivy bridge? How would you say the i5 3570 is? Keep in mind that my MOBO doesn't allow overclocking of CPUs, and I'm going to be overclocking my GPU, so I don't want any bottlenecks. The reason why I'm asking about the i5 3570, rather than the i7 3770, is because I read in many websites that the i7 version does not offer any improvements for gaming, and that it's only good for video editing and rendering, and livestreaming (none of which I do much of). So the extra £70 doesn't seem like a smart option for me.

A stock clocked i5 won't even bottleneck a 980 ti in games.

The 3570 is an i5 and the 3770 is an i7, if you can find a cheap i7 3770 then get that, neither will bottle neck your 970.

 

Also they are both quad cores, the 3770 has hyper threading.

Secondhand i5.  No reason to jump platforms.  Can get a used i5-3570/k for $125.

Yeah, it makes sense to stay on Ivy Bridge for now and get a secondhand CPU. I think I'm going to go for an i7 3770 instead of the i5 3570 though.

personally if it was me i would save a little more money and pick up a new mobo with OC and a skylake I5 k series chip, i think you should be able to do this for around £250...

 

The mobo you have now is very low end, spending say £100-120 on a good board will give you more flexibility, personally i would ditch the micro atx case and board too, and get a mid tower, in the long run it will give you much more flexibility with upgrade options.

I personally will not OC my CPU anyway, regardless if it's Ivy Bridge or Skylake, so upgrading my motherboard purely for that reason doesn't seem very logical for my instance and my budget personally. I have had no issues at all with my motherboard (except maybe the 2 slots of RAM - but I only need 8gb of RAM right now).

 

I also know that the advance in performance between the first three generations of Intel processors were remarkable, however, since the last 2 generations (Haswell and Skylake later this year), the improvements are only 10-15% in comparison to the 200-300% increase in performance between the first three generations of processors. This shows that Intel processors have gotten as far as possible, and there is no real point in spending loads just for a small improvement. Intel processors have gotten as good as they are going to get and there is very little room for improvement.

 

Therefore, Ivy Bridge seems like the most logical option for me. I could perhaps wait for Skylake, as you said, and wait for prices of Ivy Bridge to drop, however I have already found very cheap prices on Ebay for slightly used 3770s  (some almost half the price of new ones). So, should I still do what you said, considering my personal situation? I only want to hear your opinion to have a wider point of view on the subject so I can make up my mind optimally.

One thing you need to consider is that the ivy chips are very hot and the stock cooler doesn't do a good job of cooling them, i can tell you this from experience, especially the I5 and I7, even at stock....

 

bare this in mind if you stay on the micro ATX platform.

Just stay on Ivybridge for now, Skylake is coming later this year so Haswell will be a waste.

I'm not really thinking of upgrading to Skylake anyway. I'm going to upgrade my CPU to a better Ivy Bridge CPU, and even when Skylake comes out, I'm not going to upgrade to it, simply because the improvements for gaming between generations nowadays is minimal anyway. So I'm going to upgrade to an i7 3770.
