GTX 980 SLI FREEZING ON FIRST RUN OF GAME ONLY

Hi All,

I am new in this forum and truly speaking I have joined this because I am facing a wierd issue with my system which I bought recently.

First of all, please see below my main configuration components:

1. 5820k

2. MSI x99A Gaming 8 MOBO

3. 2x ASUS STRIX 980

4. COOLER MASTER V1200 PLATINUM

The problem which I am facing is that whenever I run any game like GTA V, Wither 3 or Arkham Knight, within 5-10 minutes, my system just freeze with a buzzing sound. Then I reset my system with the reset button and after getting into Windows I relaunch the game and everything is fine. The strange thing is that it happens first time only.

Also, in the process of troubleshooting, I found that the Strix 980 runs very fine individually means when without SLI, I am running on a single card. I have done this with both cards in their respective slots and also did with interchanging the slot.

Any one will say at first glance that the temperatures must be higher, but I have monitored that too and it is not more than 70 degrees when running the games. Also, note that it runs fine in the second run. And also theres no short of power supply, as I am using 1200w platinum PSU.

After pulling my hair for weeks I finally decided to post it here.. Any expert guys plz help, I will really appreciate it.

I'm no expert, but I'm curious if you have up to date drivers for the GPU. Also, can the buzzing sound be isolated to any one part?

Fine you want the PSU tier list? Have the PSU tier list: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1116640-psu-tier-list-40-rev-103/

Yes I have installed the latest drivers, first tried with 353.06, 353.30, also currently using the hotfix driver 353.49, I have tried with windows 8, 8,1 as well as windows 10 but same issue persists.

I am not able to isolate it.

My guess would be possibly coil whine on the motherboard... The game freeze issue might be a bug with SLI, I don't know, but if that is, that's a new one to me.

C'mon LTT forums I'm not the only one who saw this. Help the dude out.

You mean the bug is with the mobo... means I have to get it RMA?

this is really odd, try a different psu or motherboard combo. That should give some answers. if not RMA the mobo psu and gpu.

I have the same problem. It's most likely a bad graphics card or CPU. Then again, It could be a compatibility problem with something.

Were you able to solve the problem?

What config you have? Which mobo, cpu and gpu you are using?

I am doing the RMA for mobo and both gpu. PSU is the least likely to be faulty as it runs fine from second time onwards.
