Setting up openVPN on my AC68u Router

79wjd

I set up a VPN on my Asus RT-AC68u and I'm trying to connect to it from my Mac but I'm having an issue.

I was told I just need to export the .ovpn file from the router and open that in Tunneblick and connect and it should work, but it doesn't. (I know that the configuration file and VPN server are working since I can connect from my phone)

Is there anything else I need to do?

  • 3 weeks later...

bump

I've since contacted Asus and openVPN about a dozen times with absolutely no success from Asus and no response from openVPN.

Are there other programs or services in OSX that can be used/tried?  I have extremely limited knowledge with OSX but being unix-like maybe there is a specific command line you have to enter to open specific traffic?

I had the same issue when I tried with the openVPN app on windows (the openVPN app on iOS works fine).

/my bad, I forgot to add that

has it got something to do with ssl enabled/forced or something like that in windows/osx?

I have no idea? /how would I disable SSL (and why would that cause an issue anyway)?

I don't know, it's just that the errors it's reporting are ssl errors.  I just figured it was a certificate/algorithm mismatch or something simiar seeing as the two desktop OS had issues but the mobile app didn't.

What's interesting is that my work computer throws an entirely different error... (the network's firewall shouldn't be an issue)

Hmm,  I notice that one says IPv6,  could your modem/router/VPN host possibly being IPv4 be the issue?  Maybe there is a setting int he software or the router that allows you to add/change protocols.

I saw that, and that was my initial assumption, but I can't imagine that would be an issue -- IPv6 should be disabled across the board... so I'm not really sure.

I was speaking with Asus support....again... and one of their support team members seems to think it's an issue with the the device not having a static IP, but that makes no sense to me. I shouldn't need to have a static IP in order to connect to a VPN (although, it's easy enough to test that theory out -- once I get home).

If that does work out to be the case maybe you just need to use one of those dynamicDNS services.

The device needs a static IP -- on the network -- which would be as simple as assigning a static IP from the DHCP server of the router/in windows. Which, like I said, really shouldn't matter.

But your VPN sopftware needs to be able to find your home router across the internet, if your ISP allocated IP changes then the VPN software won't know where to look, even if your home computer has a static local IP.

Oh, I'm already running DDNS on the router, and the router also has a config file that can be exported (and imported into the VPN client). So I have no issues connecting from my iPhone using the same config file. So the issue lies with my Mac and my W7 computer (or some setting in the router which would work differently with iOS and W7/OSX -- although I don't believe it to be an issue with the router's settings).

Does your iphone connect when you are out roaming on mobile data?  I ask because it might be connecting straight across your local network (wifi) instead of through the internet avoiding the need for ddns and the config file altogether.

Yep, it works fine on LTE (and as a proof on concept it's also able to Connect to the VPN while on the same network (I can check the routers log and it dos actually connect to the VPN -- so my desktop should also theoretically be able to connect even though it's on the same network).
