1,000 Post! DIY Fan Power Hub Tutorial!

Since this is my 1,000th post, I have decided to put together a useful tutorial for everyone.

I will teach everyone an easy way to connect PC fans and watercooler pumps to a power supply without modding cables or buying any expensive fan controllers. The downside is that the motherboard cannot read or control the fans. They just go at a set speed. Even though the lower speeds work on most pumps, my swiftech ones run extremely slow to the point of being nearly useless on the lowest speed.

All you will need is a paperclip, a pliers, and a power supply with a floppy drive connector.

You need to understand the pinouts and color code of PC fans:

The 4 pin fans are the same as 3 pin fans in this scenario but without the PWM (blue) wire.

This can be configured for three different speeds:

Low speed:

You will need two pieces of paperclips.

Push them into the black and red wires on the floppy drive connector.

Plug a fan on it with the GND (usually black) on the fan to the GND (black) of the floppy, and the +12v on the fan (red or yellow, right next to the black wire on the fan) on the +5v (red) on the floppy.

Medium speed:

You will need two pieces of paperclips with a bend in them.

Push them into the red and yellow wires on the floppy drive connector.

Plug a fan on it with the GND (usually black) on the fan to the +5v (red) of the floppy, and the +12v on the fan (red or yellow, right next to the black wire on the fan) on the +12v (yellow) on the floppy.

Full speed:

Only have one floppy drive connector? Not a problem.

You can stack fan connectors on top of each other using longer paperclips.

just line the wires up on each fan connector.

Make sure to put some tape over this as the paperclips can touch things if the fan gets pulled out.

not as ghetto as removing the wires from the plastic plug and putting them into the back of the 24 pin molex. doing this enables another 3 more speeds from the 3.3v rail, although most fans dont run below 3.3v

I am not sure anyone could reach @LinusTech ghetto levels. Some of the other things I have done in a PC are certainly close though.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

FYI red is 5v

Yellow is 12v

I knew that. Orange is 3.3v, purple is usually 5v standby, blue is usually -12v

then why DL you say the 12v is red or yellow in the guide

on the fan's connector, not on the PSU. I have fans with two wires, one black, one red. Red is +12v

I have no new fans or fan hubs. this has gotten me by nicely without issues. All my fans have been scrapped from old machines

I so want a tutorial for that
