How To Overclock A Video Card: NVIDIA & AMD Graphics Card (GPU) Overclocking Guide

Update: July 18, 2015

 

Created a spreadsheet so that users of the guide can submit their overclock stats and share their overall performance increase:

 

Click Here For The "Stable Overclocks & Performance Increase" Google Spreadsheet

  • Once you've finished with this guide, feel free to add your stats to the spreadsheet above
  • Download the Unigine Valley Benchmark
  • Apply your stock GPU settings and run Valley on the "Extreme HD" preset; record your final score
  • Apply your stable GPU overclock and run Valley on the "Extreme HD" preset; record your final score
  • Add your data to the spreadsheet above and use the formula in the last column to view your overall performance increase

I thought AMD okays their cores, at least the Hawaii for 95*C after which they do the throttle magic

I thought AMD okays their cores, at least the Hawaii for 95*C after which they do the throttle magic

 

i'm not sure if the card will throttle after 95 or not. i've never pushed an amd card past 85 degrees on the core for too long because it's pointless for general overclocking purposes. if you find any info on this please post it.

My 290 never reaches 95* it drops the clockspeed just slightly before the 95*C and tries to stay at 93~94*C

Surprisingly enough I do not feel any performance hit whatsoever while playing GTA V the only way I know it happens is because I have GPU-Z running at all times.

 

I have to monitor my VRM_1 though - it forces a system reboot after reaching 130*C

And I still love my XFX Black DD

I've got an early revision that was sitting in stock for almost a year since they were released.

XFX has fixed the issue in a couple of later revisions. They agreed to exchange the card if I RMA it, but since the RMA process takes 30+ days before I get a working card back and I run an x99 platform, I can't just surrender my card and render my PC unusable...

I'm waiting for a couple of events to occur in a specific order before I go out and get two Fury X's after that I am selling the card to a friend of mine who will start the RMA process on his behalf and end up with a brand new 290 for half the price  - win-win (:

 

I'm running 1100 Core / 1300 Mem / +31 mV / +35% Power

and It's not THAT bad... it only goes that hot ocasionally... sometimes I can get 4~5 hours of uninterupted GTA V, while other times I have to do Alt-Tabs every 30 mins or so to prevent it from rebooting the system.

Most of the times I only play some casual games like WoW or NFS Underground 2, then I set a profile of 490 core / 625 Mem / -100 mV / -50% Power

that alows me to turn off fans and never exceed 55*C on Core and 40*C on VRM

Thomb Rider 2013 on the other hand is just trying to fry my VRM and makes me Alt-Tab every 5~10 mins or so..

very cool. i can't believe the rma process takes that long! good thing you found a friend to sell it to. thanks for sharing bro. i'm running an asus 7950 hd @:

 

1060 core

1.181v core voltage

1650 memory

+20% power limit

 

temps never exceed 60 degrees in all games

 

stable for 45 minutes in occt with error check enabled

I don't have a problem linking to that one and replacing mine. The reason I created my own was because it's specific to the type of stress testing tools that I cover in my guide. I believe true (true enough) stability is achieved by using OCCT with error check enabled and EVGA OC Scanner X with artifact scanner enabled. I doubt most of the postings in the other spreadsheet have tested their overclocks using these tools. I don't consider a lot of those overclocks truly stable. My spreadsheet is a reflection of those who have taken the time to look for real stability and who've used my principles outlined in my guide.

 

Does this make sense?

 

If at the end of the day, you'd still like me to replace it with the other spreadsheet, I will.

Thank you for the guide. I've been able to push my r9 270 from 955 mhz to 1080 mhz, but I've run into an issue with afterburner. The slider for GPU voltage is locked. I have searched extensively, but most tutorials or fixes are for people who are having issues with 3.x.x... not the most current version, 4.1.1. Is there anything that you know of that I can do to unlock the voltage control on afterburner? I'd appreciate the help. Thank you!!

 

Edit: I'd also like to point out that in my version of AB, the Graphics Processor Type option (whereby you select "Standard"), does not appear.

When I am OCing my GPU I don't change the voltage (well it is locked) but I just crank all the settings until I get like +600mhz on Memory and +75Mhz on Core. I never worry about heat either as my dual 760s rarely break 75 OCed

Thank you for the guide. I've been able to push my r9 270 from 955 mhz to 1080 mhz, but I've run into an issue with afterburner. The slider for GPU voltage is locked. I have searched extensively, but most tutorials or fixes are for people who are having issues with 3.x.x... not the most current version, 4.1.1. Is there anything that you know of that I can do to unlock the voltage control on afterburner? I'd appreciate the help. Thank you!!

 

Edit: I'd also like to point out that in my version of AB, the Graphics Processor Type option (whereby you select "Standard"), does not appear.

which brand is your r9 270? some cards have been known to be voltage locked. once you provide me with the brand, i may be able to help you.

 

i'm assuming that you've selected "unlock voltage control" and restarted your computer to no avail.

in msi ab, try "disabling" low-level hardware access interface; do this by unchecking the box. select unlock voltage control. does this work?

according to this review, the msi 270x is voltage locked. i know you have an msi 270, but if the msi 270x is locked, then your gpu is most likely locked as well

you could try flashing a different bios that allows you to adjust the voltage, but i can't recommend this because i've never done it before and it could potentially kill your card. the guys who use to use these cards to mine bitcoin would edit the stock bios with VBE7 which unlocked voltage control. again, i cannot confirm this, but apparently it has been done

 

another option is to try using msi ab v 3.0.0 beta 18; apparently, this version allows voltage control on the 270, but i cannot confirm this

next time, when you buy a gpu, do some research and find out if the card you want to purchase is voltage locked. stay away from those ones.

I gotcha. I tried using v3 beta 18, but when I install it on either of my machines it says "Some of MSI Afterburner components are expired, missing or corrupted". I'm going to look into modding the BIOS
