Questions about Nvidia Reference Blower style coolers (metallic one)

LaboonTheWhale

Hey all

So i'm switching to team green this generation to throw into an ITX build. My general understanding is with cases that have pretty restricted airflow you should go with reference blowerstyle coolers.

The only experience i have with blower style coolers is the R9 290 and we all know how that was.

Are those Nvidia coolers loud at all? also does it get ridiculously hot to where it may cause some problems?

Case i was looking to get has a pretty big ventilation hole (240mm) infront of the GPU for airflow so would it still be a better idea to get a reference cooler or take a bit of an overall temperature hit to the system and get a non-reference/ third party cooler gpu? The GPU in question is the 980Ti

(sorry. I only know AMD coolers so im really ignorant in this field)

Nvidia reference cooler is good. Not too loud, not too hot. Still wouldn't get it. Non-reference cooler can definitely get you more speed for the money.

You could get a Gigabyte ITX version of your graphics card.

looking into getting the RVZ01 or RVZ02 or that new fractal node 202 which has space for a full sized gpu and a 240mm ventilation area for the gpu so it has fresh air so I dont think i would really need to get an itx version right?

the EVGA ACX2.0 is $40 more than the reference design, maybe worth taking the hit?

I've heard their cooling blows.

well it depends. node 202 looks like it's designed for a blower card.

I have 2 gentle typhoons or NF-F12's I can throw in there if Airflow is really required. Since it seems the GPU is in somewhat of its own compartment separate of the PSU and Mobo I figured it wouldn't take as much of a hit as if it were in the same compartment.

The reference nvidia cooler is quiet, until you put it under high load. Then it's pretty loud depending on the case of course. Temps are average, not that great compared to an open cooler but still decent, I tend to get around 79C to 80C on my 770 when playing just cause 2. When just browsing etc. the cooler is still audible, but is fairly quiet (I've tested it with the rest of my rig being passively cooled).

If you are using a case with tight airflow, go for it, but otherwise unless you can't live without the aesthetics then go for something with a better cooler.

I have reference 980. On idle I cant hear it, and when playing I really cant notice it, even tho its overclocked. I have corsair 350d case, h80i gt cpu coller. Have replaced all fans to corsair af and sp quiet edition fans, so idle its dead silent, pretty much same as when gaming.

My experience with them are that they are aren't really that great when it comes to temps or noise, but not completely horrible either. You will definitely hear them when gaming though.

Upside is that they look nice and vent most of the heat outside of your case.

I bought a reference 980 ti because there was a fourth of July sale I couldn't pass up, but if I hadn't found it for 55 dollars off I probably would have went with a non reference one. I accept that the temps and noise are going to be fairly bad, but im willing to accept it so long as I can game on ultra settings at 1440p on modern titles for a while.

I owned an MSI twin frozr 280x and I barely heard it when gaming, it was way queter than a NVidia reference and had better temps.
