Realistically, how long will my SSD last under normal use?

I have a Samsung 850 evo SSD. How long will it last before it starts to go bad if I use it for normal tasks? The most I will do is download large games and sometimes movies or shows.

if it fails it will likely be an early failure not due to being worn down. Their degradation is a bit exaggerated.

You can't really defrag an SSD in windows unless you use third-party programs. But yeah, depends how much you write/read to/from the SSD. Under normal use I would say 5-10 years? Depends of course what "normal use" is for you.

2 years ago I got myself a 840 Evo 120GB (I believe its going to be exactly 2 years this week) ,now it has around 8TB written and I only lost 1% of the blocks, as long as your daily writes are between 0-10gb you nothing to worry about at least for 4-5 years.

Even if you found a way to defrag it, it would be pretty irrelevant anyway... You'd have to be writing a few TB per day to kill it off through writes.

 

OP: Basically what the other guys said really. You'll probably replace it before it fails unless it's a bad unit.

If it's the 1TB version then you don't have to worry about that at all, that drive could probably be passed down a few generations before it's dead.

If I got an SSD that big, I'd probably only use < 50GB anyway just for Windows, Office Suite, and the Adobe Suite. Maybe Steam too.

Personally I'd recommend storing movies or shows on a HDD, since access time isn't that critical. Games would be a no-brainer to go on the SSD.

 they should last an extremely long time but like anything there is no set date on how long it should last, same with normal hard drives, you can get one that lasts a week and another one that can last 10+ years
