Need help connecting multiple monitors of different refresh rates.

So I just got a 144hz monitor for gaming to go alongside my 60 hz monitor which I use for watching TV/Movies and a previously a bit of gaming.

Initially I had both monitors running simultaneously on extended. The problem was that the rate was only 60. I tried change it by going to the desktop, right clicking ..... advanced settings change refresh rate. For some reason this would not let me change it to 144hz.

Next I unplugged the 60hz monitor at which point I could have the 144hz monitor on its own running at 144hz which was good for a bit. I do quite like a dual monitor set up though so I need help having both the monitors running at their corresponding refresh rates.

 

Is this possible?

Currently my connections are set up as follows:

PC---->Monitor

144hz: DVI to DVI

60hz:   HDMI to DVI

Any help or questions would be awesome!
