TI-83 vs TI-84

So, I'm headed into high school next year and looking into graphingf calculators. They said that you should have either a TI-83 or TI-84 but nothing smaller. What are the major differences between the two, and which one is the better choice when price is not a factor.

Go for a used TI-86. They are way better and lasted me through college.

I have the TI-84 Plus, which is pretty much standard issue for all high school students in the Netherlands. Can't go wrong with that.

New to Star Citizen? Look no further!

Ti-89 Titanium has all the bells and whistles, and can integrate/differntiate and is way, way better. It does everything the ti-83+ does and more, except for a few very specific Ti-83+ apps.

The downside? Many math classes ban the Ti-89ti because it's too powerful. It's very class dependent. Some engineering/physics classes basically require it, some math classes ban it.

edit: oh, and if buying, look on Amazon and check their used section. $150+ calculators can be found for ~$60 there.

The functional differences (which aren't huge) likely aren't even relevant to you. I'd go with whichever is cheaper -- I've been using my Ti-83 for the last 6 years (which included Trig, Algebra 2, geometry, pre-calc, calc, and linear algebra and a bunch of other college math classes), and I've yet to use it for much more than basic operations (addition/subtraction/etc...) and a bit of graphing.

TI-84 is the newer and better calculator. They will outlast you if you take care of it. My brother got one when he was a Freshman in High School and he's since then passed it down to me and I'm still using it and it works.

I own a TI-83 Plus, and I'm going to be a junior this coming fall. The only major differences are some extra features on the TI-84, mostly firmware, and the micro USB plug, which is MUCH better over the 2.5mm jack on my TI-83. This allows you to connect it to a PC and load programs onto the calculator. Also the TI-84 is generally newer. I still like my TI-83 Plus, as it's simple and easy to use.

EDIT: I would advise not getting an Nspire calculator despite what others have said. A lot of testing administrators and teachers do not allow these calculators or calculators with 'multi-view' during testing. Also, my TI-83 is almost 5 years old and still works as new. Take care of it and it will take care of you. These things are built to last.
