Questions regarding 144hz

KingWookie

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum here but having been watching Linus' videos for about a year now. I keep hearing about all the great advice here so I'm posting looking for clarification on 144hz monitors. Please read entire post before commenting :)

I'm in the market for a new gaming monitor. I'm currently using a run-of-the-mill 1080p 60hz display. Most of the games I play are AAA such as GTA V and Witcher 3. Because I like my graphics turned up to the max my FPS most of the time does not exceed 60 or 70 FPS with my setup. Sometimes I even get drops to 50 or 40. I'd like to upgrade my monitor but I have heard conflicting information regarding 144hz and lower fps that I would like to have cleared up. Some people report no benefit if an fps higher than 60 cannot be achieved while others do report benefits.

Firstly, I know that a 144hz display will not give me 144fps if my setup cannot generate it. The reasons I'm considering a 144hz display are as follows.

1) Does 144hz greatly reduce motion blur? Is this true at 60fps?

2) Does 144hz greatly reduce screen tearing and input lag? Is this true at 60fps?

3) Is v-sync necessary at all on 144hz?

4) Would my situation benefit more from g-sync or IPS? Keep in mind that lower fps doesn't really bother me. Input delay and screen tearing do.

Setup: i5 3570k, MSI GTX 970, 8Gb RAM

Thank you!

1. yes, no 60fps is still 60.

2. yes and no, input lag doesn't depend on refresh rate.

3. not really

4. g-sync
