Help: My CPU isn't being recognized anymore

I just find it hard to believe that it can be the BIOS especially since for example Windows Task Manager is showing everything CPU-Z isn't showing currently, L1 to L3 cache, Socket, Cores, Threads and Virtualization and MSI Afterburner is getting the temp quite fine even now. Forgive my ignorance but I thought only reflashes during power loss is the only way to corrupt a BIOS. I can do the reflash and hope for now power loss but I'm very hesitant.

But if I reflash the BIOS and that doesn't help, what would be the next move you would suggest?

CPU-Z did have a problem reading cpu info at one point, are you using the latest cpu-z software? If Windows task manager reads fine, the problem is related to cpu-z.

 

Could be a corrupted file in registry. Probably a fresh install of Windows would fix it. You can freshinstall when windows 10 is released, I think the will offer cheap licenses in the beginning.

Everything use to be okay and fine but then I noticed it first couple of months ago HWInfo started reporting a frozen temperature on the second core of my i3 3240. I thought it was the program but then I went into CPU-Z and saw it suddenly can't detect the core either and the L1 and L3 cache data is suddenly gone.
 
Not only does CPU-Z can't properly identify my CPU but Prime95 as well. It picks up that it's an Intel i3/i5/i7 but for the working threads it reports 16 available rather than 4. L1 and L3 cache results are also missing. BIOS, Task Manager and MSI Afterburner all work fine and recognize the CPU completely. MSI Afterburner is also the only application that can detect the temperature of the 2nd core properly.

 

I've already uninstalled & reinstalled the CPU drivers & the programs affected, went into msconfig and change around the core count from the default setting, disabled a core and hyperthreading in BIOS, nothing helps yet. The only thing that did happen was that Prime95 recognized when I set the CPU to be a single core with no HT on and so produced 1 worker rather than 16. Anyone knows how to deal with this?

I'm on Windows 8.1 64 bit

Cinabench it, and compare to a new one. If your performance is much worse. Probably the motherboard is defect, maybe the CPU if you have been running hot with stock cooler.

The typical Cinebench I see for it is around 3.3 to 3.5 points in R11.5, I get 3.36. Temperatures are always cool, it has never gotten higher than the 60 - 65 C range but that's with a custom fan curve, if I let the system handle it by the motherboard's standards, it will never get above 55 C.

 

Maybe try resetting or re-flashing the BIOS?

 

No I haven't and I don't think I should go that route. Ever since the system was built, the motherboard has been on the latest BIOS available so I didn't have to touch it at all and things were fine then so I don't see why I should touch it now especially if the BIOS is recognizing everything perfectly. I'm thinking this is something Windows based because as stated everything use to be fine, HWInfo, CPU-Z, Prime95 everything.

Seems like a bios related issue with how the bios and windows layer communicate. What to blame, the bios.

I'll be trying the reflashing of the BIOS to kill all suspicions there but yeah this is more what I think is wrong something registry based. If I only knew on the technical level where CPU-Z is pulling the data from, this would probably be an easier fix. But remember its not just CPU-Z gone bad; its HWInfo, I didn't mention it but I also have OCCT, HWMonitor, CoreTemp all of these aren't picking it up well but Windows Task Manager, MSI Afterburner and RealTemp all pick up the CPU perfectly.

I did the BIOS reflash didn't touch a single setting, just came straight into Windows. As suspected nothing changed in any of the programs so the BIOS was not the problem.

Some monitoring programs use shared code so a simple bug in this code might cause the same problem in multiple programs.  

 

Can you post a screenshot of ThrottleStop?  It reports each thread individually so might show you if there is a problem or not.  It was written by the same programmer that wrote RealTemp (me) so uses some of the same code that RealTemp uses.  I also included a link to a newer version of RealTemp that was not widely released.

 

Screenshots help programmers see what code is working and what is not working.

 

Also go into msconfig and instead of selecting 4 processors, just leave that blank and then reboot.  There is no need to select a number of processors.  This setting causes problems sometimes.

Thanks for the screenshots.  RealTemp and ThrottleStop confirm that they have no problem accessing both cores and all 4 threads of your CPU.

 

When you took those screenshots, was your CPU idle or was there anything running in the background?  If your CPU was supposed to be idle then you should use the Task Manager to find out what is running in the background.  The Load reported by RealTemp when idle should be down around 0.5%.  On a lean system, you should see a number even lower than that.

P95=hazard, also reset BIOS by removing battery helps unless you got a Linux version to test with to see if Windows is broken and not BIOS! :D

CPU-Z did have a problem reading cpu info at one point, are you using the latest cpu-z software? If Windows task manager reads fine, the problem is related to cpu-z.

 

Could be a corrupted file in registry. Probably a fresh install of Windows would fix it. You can freshinstall when windows 10 is released, I think the will offer cheap licenses in the beginning.

An update to this. Just upgraded to Windows 10 today, problems totally gone now so yep it was something that went bad in Windows registry causing the issues :)
