In the latest Windows 10 Technical Preview, when adding/changing your Product Key, you're presented with this window:

"Your product key should be in an email from whoever sold or distributed Windows to you, or on the box the Windows USB came in."

Could Microsoft be selling the retail copy of Windows 10 by USB? It would make sense, provided most Computers and Laptops these days don't ship with CD/DVD Drives. What do you think?

They're $10-ish more than the DVD version.

Strange, haven't seen it on the news anywhere. Thanks for your reply.

There has already been a post on this and it is terrible for retailers. At the moment there are the following SKU's for Windows that retailers carry;

  • Win 8.1 Retail
  • Win 8.1 32 bit OEI
  • Win 8.1 64 bit OEI
  • Win 8.1 Pro Retail
  • Win 8.1 Pro 32 bit OEI
  • Win 8.1 Pro 64 bit OEI

Windows 10 is set to have 3 models available for retail; Standard, Education and Pro. That'll mean 3 SKU's for each under the current system totaling 9 SKU's. However if they're to do USB options too across the board that'll be 18 SKU's to stock. The only way that they can fix this is to only offer it on Retail SKU's, not OEM/OEI.

But it's not; you've got 64 and 32 bit OEI's plus retail SKU's too. Then double it for USB options.

EDIT: Plus there are I believe 8 versions for Windows 10 including Enterprise and Embeded plus Tablet and stuff.

a reusable USB stick would be really nice actually.... never can have enough flash drives, they are like batteries xD

I wouldn't trust a retail USB. The flash is likely garbage that loses its data rapidly. If you went 3 years and suddenly had to rebuild your system, and the flash had lost its charge completely, you'd be down shit creek with no paddle. This is why optical media will never fully die.

What I don't get at that point is, since 32-bit and 64-bit cost the same, why doesn't Microsoft just sell all versions of Windows as 32/64 bit compatible as to avoid the bifurcation? I guess the issue becomes that they will have to include both OS images on separate USB drives/DVDs?

True but for many of us 3 years is long enough for buying a new OS isn't a problem, and there'll probably (definitely) be another new Windows by then.

That happens to be just over 3 years (release to manufacturing between each), but 8/8.1 were primarily garbage anyway. If we follow the Microsoft cadence of every other OS being good (98-2000-XP-vista-7-8/8.1-10) then it comes out to 6-7 years between each worthwhile OS.
