First Custom PC (For Video production/Casual Gaming)

Go to solution Solved by brob,

Boxed Xeon E3 cpu usually come with an Intel stock fan. The stock fan is an efficient cooler. It may be a bit loud when the cpu is fully loaded, but for average use its noise level is quite tolerable.

Ot her than that, the build looks pretty good.

I'm planning on a new computer since my Lenovo Z50-75 laptop isn't quite as I hoped it was on 3D video production...

Here is what I've come up with a budget of $US 1500 (But I'm Malaysian so its MYR 4985)

  • INTEL CORE I5-4690K
  • ASROCK Z97E-ITX/AC
  • GSKILL RipjawsX XM 2x8GB DDR3 2133mhz
  • ASUS GTX960 STRIX 4GB DDR5
  • CoolerMaster G650M
  • WD 2TB Caviar Black
  • CORSAIR Obsidian 250D

So, what do you (members of the LTT forum) think??? (For me this rig is already expensive >.<)  ^_^

Im from Malaysia..... Wooooo!!! The land where 1 USD is 4.33 MYR...

PCPartPicker wont do for me...  :(

if the price to a e3 1231v3 isn't too much more expensive then the i5 4690k, then it'll be a better buy because you can drop the motherboard to H97

eh.. get an SSD at least

I'm guessing that I'll change the 2TB to a 1TB and add a PLEXTOR M.2 2280 128GB SSD??

An E3 1231v3 would cost me extra.... And I'm trying to preserve the small form factor... Plus the Z97E has 6 Sata ports, so an extra few HDDs would be easier (I've done that to all my past Computers...)

well how much more?

since you are doing video production the e3 1231v3 might be a little more then a i5 but cheaper then an i7 while still having hyper threading. so thats why I brought it up =)

Consider an H81 or H97 motherboard with a Xeon E3 or locked i7 cpu.

DDR3-1600 CL 9 is a good memory choice and often less expensive than DDR3-2133. The performance difference is marginal.

An ssd system drive will make a big difference. Go with a less expensive hdd if necessary.

Local prices may differ, but consider a less expensive case like the Cooler Master Elite 130

Why a H81 or H97 motherboard? So no overclocking?

The Cooler Master Elite is a bit too big... Plus it looks like a microwave oven... Indeed it is cheaper

Unfortunately, there are no DDR3-1600 CL 9 at the store I'm buying at..

The Z97E-ITX/AC has an M.2 SSD slot of which I assume I'm going to use..

Would 2 1TB WD Blue do any good?

No overclocking, but less expensive.

If the choice is between 2x1TB and a 2TB WD Balck, stay with the 2TB drive.

I was just trying to suggest avenues to reduce cost without seriously affecting performance. Hopefully to create space in the budget for a Xeon with hyperthreading or i7. (Note some lower models of Xeon do not have hyperthreading and would be no different than getting a locked i5.)

My store recommended me this:

  • INTEL XEON E3-1231V3
  • ASROCK Z97M PRO4
  • GSKILL RipjawsX XM 2x4GB DDR3 2400mhz (CL11)
  • ASUS GTX970 StriX 4GB DDR5 256Bit (1253/7010)
  • CoolerMaster G650M (80+ Bronze/ Semi Modular/ 5 Years Warranty)
  • CRYORIG C1
  • COOLERMASTER N200 WINDOW
  • SEAGATE 2TB Barracuda 7200RPM/64MB
  • PLEXTOR M6S 128GB (520/300)

Hovering around $US1238 (MYR4713)

Any other things you (members of the LTT forum) would like to change?
