I need a mechanical keyboard

Bloodyvalley

I'm tired of this SteelSeries APEX keyboard. I'm ready to do the switch and am willing to spend upwards of $150-$175 on a keyboard.

What I do: mostly type, I'm a future programmer and I am an avid gamer (especially during summertime)

A keyboard I could bring to class would be pretty cool lol but it's not going to happen because I want the num pad

I also need media keys

I don't need macro keys

Which keyboard would be suitable for me? I've seen the K70 and the software looks terrible so I wouldn't want to deal with that HOWEVER it does look pretty damn awesome so I might give it a go

K70, Razer Blackwidow Chroma is also good. Has easier software. Roccat has a keyboard I believe but they're overpriced.

Definitely not getting a razer keyboard, that's out of the damn question.

I think the K70 looks pretty awesome though especially the effects that you can do with them

Check out the link in my sig about keyswitches as I need to know what switch you want before recommending you anything. You have a high price point though so skip all and go straight for Filco or Ducky.

Nothing wrong with Razer, brands don't matter. I prefer the Razer keyboard and plan on getting one over the Corsair K70 even though the Corsair keyboard is cool and good but their SSDs are questionable so ???.

Just remember not to fall into the realm of RGB Keyboards.  Don't buy a keyboard because of the fancy lights it has. They mean nothing at all. It doesn't even have a real practical purpose. If you're going to complain about the bad lights in your house, why are you getting a keyboard before fixing your sh*tty house?

I kinda find the lights cool on the K70

Not sure, I'm a gamer but I also type a lot. What would you recommend? I don't think I'd want to hammer the keys either. I'm hesitating between MX Reds and Blacks. I kinda wanna hear that satisfying noise though.

Well that link below has a short quiz that can help you decide. Blues are clicky and loud BTW. Reds are a dull, light thump. Reds are very, very light with no tactile bump to "slow" you down which gives them the impression of being nearly weightless compared to blues. The actuation difference is pretty much negligible between them, just the blues feel heavier because of the tactile bump.

I would suggest the blues from personal experience but if you like the short travel of the reds then there's nothing wrong with that as it's all subjective.

For either switch I recommend the Ducky Shine 4. Some of the best build quality out there. Filco is also quite good though WAY less flashy.

I'm on the fence.

MX Blues or Reds

I want to type fast but I am afraid that the blues will slow me down because of the force required to press

They're still quite light. I would guess that you'll actually find them too light at first then get used to them over time.

I'll go with MX Blues then

edit: is this good? I'm wondering if it can remove the space bar? I need it for cleaning and such and I might buy new keycaps. Anyway, which keyboard do I go with?

Alrighty! Check out the Ducky then! If that doesn't look appealing to you then Cooler Master has great options for much less and you said you like the K70 and that comes with blues.

My Ducky Shine 3 TKL was perhaps the best purchase I've ever made. The build quality is unparalleled and the weight adds to the feel of its quality. Definitely would recommend one.

I recommend you buy a keyswitch tester to see what switches you like.

Too expensive, honestly, but the worst part is that I have to wait for shipping to bring it, and I want to order now so that I can get it this week (preferably before Friday, because my friend is coming and I want to show it off :D)

What about WASD keyboards?

They're pretty good! You can't get backlighting on one of their keyboards without getting Greens or Clears though if that matters to ya.

Well then go Ducky my friend.

What about Corsair? Does Ducky have cool visual effects like I saw in the K70 review of Linus such as the Ripple effect?

It's not RGB like the Corsair though the LEDs are going to be much more reliable than what Corsair offers. But no, no ripple effect as far as I know.

For a starter keyboard, I recommend a Cherry MX. That means NO RAZER. The main 3 switches are MX Reds which have no bump or sound until you hit the bottom, MX Browns which have a bump that you can feel when the switch actuates, and MX Blues which have a bump and a clicky sound when the switch actuates. The switches are all up to preference.

For sizes, it is all up to preference. Full size is, well, full size. Ten Keyless or "TKL" is a full size that had the number pad chopped off. 60% is kind of a weird size. Go look it up. But if you're leaving your keyboard in one place all the time, I don't recommend it.

Most keyboards have the media keys you are looking for (I assume you mean pause, play, etc.).

There are a lot of good brands. Corsair, Cooler Master, Ducky, WASD, Das Keyboard, and many more sell good boards.

My first mechy was a Cooler Master CM Storm Quickfire Rapid. It's a good, inexpensive keyboard that has all the basics and everything you need to get into the MKC (mechanical keyboard club). It's still my favorite keyboard, as I prefer TKL. If you want backlighting, there's the CM Storm Quickfire Rapid-i. It's the same keyboard, but with backlighting (wow, imagine that! :P ). The K70 is also pretty good (I have a few friends that love it), and there are a bunch of other good ones from other brands I listed.

I hope this long post at least helped a little bit :)

Have a nice day!

You know that guy that games on a MacBook? I'm that guy.

Where would you go to buy a Ducky keyboard? Can you give me a link to a full-size MX Blue keyboard with backlights, please?
