New Build help with ram

Ajaydev Singh

Hello I will be building a system soon but pc part picker tells me the following below

The G.Skill Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2400 Memory operating voltage of 1.65V exceeds the Intel Haswell Refresh CPU recommended maximum of 1.5V+5% (1.575V). This memory module may run at a reduced clock rate to meet the 1.5V voltage recommendation, or may require running at a voltage greater than the Intel recommended maximum.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($328.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($104.99 @ B&H)
Motherboard: Asus Z97-A ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($139.99 @ NCIX US)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($104.78 @ OutletPC)
Total: $1365.39
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

You're fine, the memory is designed to work with haswell refresh, pcpartpicker just has to add the disclaimer so no one can claim to be butthurt without the apprpriate warning....(My coffee was hot!)

What was the limit before you had to overclock ram on z97 anyway? 1333?

I have not build the system yet.

I bought DDR3-2400 RAM as well. When I first booted it up, it was running at 1600. All you have to do, is set an XMP profile and you'll be taking full advantage of your RAM Even though it's higher voltage.

PCPartPicker's compatibility check is bs sometimes; this being one of those times.

Ram has a maximum supported speed without overclocking. with x99 it's 2133, and all those 2400 kits, and above are actually xmp profiles that the chips have been binned to run at. I couldn't remember what z97's max supported limits were without overclocking. While these kits do need more power than a normal set of z97, they have been tested, and found stable at these speeds, and power draw without damaging other components.

No. that's what Pcpartpicker says, and it's only partly wrong. Here is the direct quote from ASUS's product specs.

4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 3200(O.C.)/3100(O.C.)/3000(O.C.)/2933(O.C.)/2800(O.C.)/2666(O.C.)/2600(O.C.)/2400(O.C.)/2200(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/2000(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1600/1333 MHz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory

hope it helps
