return it to store and say it was like this when you opened the box.

it should be okay, clean the thermal compound off, apply new thermal compound and install the cooler corectly using all 4 screws.

172 degrees, I don't believe that. It should have throttled itself or shut down the computer to avoid CPU damage.

It is very hard to kill an Intel cpu I'm going just guess and say there is some other issue. I would test the cpu before you toss it.

172C? That's impossible. If you're asking if it would be damaged at that temperature...yes, yes it would be. Very damaged and completely unusable.

Your friend only have 2 of the 4 push-pins installed right. The CPU cooler is not making proper contact with the CPU.

ALL 4 must be in.

Now that the CPU won't work after reaching 172*C...then it be may damaged from the heat.

The CPU did not hit 172C. Even with my pump unplugged on my Kraken x60, it was capable of keeping my CPU under TJ Max at stock speeds - I have a 3570K.

Your CPU is a low TDP one. Most modern cpu will have some type of protection, so when it gets to a limit, it should automatically shut off. Depending on where you live, Retail cpus from Intel carries a 3 year warranty.
