Why external storage solution is SOOO expensive?

1700$ for 5x3TB drives + storage itself? 800$ just for the storage? If I just get 5x3TB drives and put them into my PC it would cost me around 600$. Why is there such a big difference?

They're probably server grade drives.

Those are usually used for servers which run almost 24/7 and collect data throughout

That's not just drives in an enclosure. It's a full NAS, with a CPU, RAM and such. If you go for a "dumb" enclosure, you'd be looking at around $50 + the price of the drives.

Do they have an integrated RAID controller?

That is a NAS, it's not your typical external drive. It has it's own board, CPU, RAM etc. The drives in them are higher grade, which is why the higher cost. That is a serious solution for companies etc. Not exactly a "home" solution. :P

Do they have an integrated RAID controller? How about hardware RAID 10?

It has a full computer inside of it. The drives are probably enterprise grade as the others have said. Finally, there's the additional cost of development of the software that the Synology runs (Proprietary RAID software) with labor and warranty.

They run software RAID made by Synology.

Hardware RAID 10 is not cheap either. My LSI MegaRAID 9260-8i CV costs $750 when it was new. Then add in the cost of a SAS breakout cable ($25 usually). You should always make sure to get the battery backup module for hardware RAID cards.
