Minecraft: Windows 10 edition announced, offers enhanced cross platform multiplayer

Minecon 2015 is happening right now, and fresh of the event is the announcement of a special version of Minecraft for Windows 10 devices, it will launch July 29th alongside Windows 10 release, this releases is being tagged as a beta, since they will take player feedback to shape the game just like the original release of Minecraft.

 

The main new feature included in this release is cross platform multiplayer capabilities between the pocket edition (pocket edition support will be added soon after launch, maybe not the same day), xbox live and this version of the game for up to 7 players either online or on a local network, other new features included better input support so players can switch between keyboard, gamepad and touch on the fly, built in GameDVR, feedback mechanisms during the beta phase and the usual minecraft gameplay with mobs, random environments, crafting, etc

 

The Windows 10 edition is free for anybody who purchased the normal PC version (pretty much everyone at this point) or it can be purchased for a discounted $10 price during the beta phase, all updates to the game will be free after the main purchase and will receive continuous support post beta

The only interesting aspect of this is the cross platform support, those that wanted to play the game with console and mobile friends/players now can, other that that its better to stick to the standard PC version unless they add mod support and dedicated servers which i doubt it given the cross platform aspect of this release

I'm starting to worry that Minecraft will become a fragmented mess. We have a version for mobile, pc, consoles and the Raspberry Pi. Most of them have a completely different state of development. The addition of a 5th version doesn't make this any better

Awesome local mulitplayer was my main problem with PC version of Mincraft.
I just hope that you can still mod it because I can't play Mincraft without my pretty shader and texture mods.

Yes, this is inherently problematic, since people will most likely have to cater to the weakest link on the server, and downgrade to the highest common version. Not ideal.

 

Everyone should just play on the best version: the PC version.

minecraft is nearly completely build on mods, without mods it will die out pretty quickly.

Not really. They're saying that the will be adding cross platform multiplayer, so they will either have to massively upgrade the pocket version, or they start the Win10 edition with the same features as the pocket version, which will make it a downgrade from the Pc version. Also, We'll have to see how this affects mods.

I played Minecraft way too much and now I haven't played it in a couple years. I will play it on HoloLens though. That stuff is crazy

Not really. They're saying that the will be adding cross platform multiplayer, so they will either have to massively upgrade the pocket version, or they start the Win10 edition with the same features as the pocket version, which will make it a downgrade from the Pc version. Also, We'll have to see how this affects mods.

since its cross play between all the versions (xbox pc etc) doenst that mean they all have to be the same

i doubt a downgrade will happen

I'm starting to worry that Minecraft will become a fragmented mess. We have a version for mobile, pc, consoles and the Raspberry Pi. Most of them have a completely different state of development. The addition of a 5th version doesn't make this any better

I think they are trying to Band the PC/Consoles platform together , Mobile version and Rasberry version can just die in a corner ...

this version shouldn't unless the programmers don't know what they are doing, this version is running on the winRT platform (aka windows store apps) and it doesn't support java, so unless they managed to port java to RT, this version shouldn't stutter or have framedrops as frequent as the normal PC version
