Engine Suggestions

Atmos

Alrighty fellas. Here's a complex one, and I don't exactly expect to get the perfect answer here, since it's a fairly, difficult question.

For the last, roughly 1/2 year now, I've been working on graphical and sound assets for a game I'm working on. I've gotten down what I want the game to be, to pretty much every detail. I've got my textures, models which can be converted, or modified, and all my vocal and audio recordings. The only issue? I can't decide what engine to use, or to just keep what I'm doing and use a modified version of java, which I hate, resource management seems to be really hard to get in some sort of fashion workable.

The game isn't that complex, I'm planning it being a top-down, open world, rpg with moderate lighting effects, some static elements, a large number of dynamic elements and the crucial bit that's been a little hard to get working properly a co-op gameplay feature. The models in game I'm intending to be sprites, so not really 3d models, though I have the basic 3d models for each asset already mapped, just not textured, so that can change.

TLDR: Anyone got any discreet ideas for an engine i should use? Or should I just keep working on my custom engine, which is going to be scrapping java soon entirely and running off it's own sc. Also, I'm perfectly willing to re-render my assets into other formats for use in pretty much any engine. They're all in the most basic format I can manage atm.

Well, I'm currently in university working on my Software Engineering Master, with a focus on Video Game Development. I was inspired as a child by my all-time favorite game, EV Nova, which is a Top-down space shooter that pretty much invented the space-open world RPG. It's a game that I still play to this day, and enjoy every moment of it. The team that made this wonder game, was "Atmos" an Australian graphics company that shut down shortly after the games release. This is where my pseudo name comes from that I've used for years now online. It was also the inspiration for my study in video game creation.

Anyway, the game I'm making, could be considered a spiritual successor to the now dead EV series, it's a top down space sim with a primary focus on open world sandboxing and making your own decisions. The main storyline has many, many branching stories, and a large number of endings, with plenty of game changing decisions to be made along the way that change key outcomes in the game. Hopefully a coop feature being able to get thrown in, so that the vast emptiness of space, can seem just a bit more full. This is something I've been working for now for almost 9 months, starting first with concept art, then moving into sprites, and 3d models. Then I worked on the audio clips and various sounds I hope to either use in it, or use as a template for further audio recording.

Unreal Engine perhaps, it's free (has royalty if you make money though), and should do everything you want.

Unity 5

Oh, I hadn't actually considered Unity. Last time i used it was a oculus rift demo i was dinking around with... This might be promising xD.

Unreal engine.

Unreal eh? Also has official "support" for vr as well. Might be interesting to see what can be managed in it. In experienced hands the engine can look damn good, like, really really good.

Thanks for the suggestions mates.

Unreal Engine 4 would indeed be my 2nd suggestion :)

Unity works great with 2D and 3D games and can even handle Online games.

I think Unity is easier to use, but I think you can do more advanced stuff with UE4.

It also depends on what system(s) you want to have your game on

Unity, from what I've used of it, does seem a lot easier to run with. Heck, in 15 minutes you can get basic cinematics running w/o any prior use.

Yea that's another thing I was concerned with as for operating systems, pretty much only focusing on windows atm. I understand the OS's functionality far more than I know osx or linux. Though, I should really work on my linux some more...

I think UE4 only uses C++ too, making things a bit harder (compared to Unity's C# or Javascript).

Unity is easily made into an .exe for Windows, Linux or OSX.. You can have it on websites too or port to mobile devices (at least Android) and Unity works with consoles too, but not sure which ones now and how much it would cost to bring your game out on those).

Unity 5 is even coming to the New 3DS :o
