Which is better in 1080p, 970 or 390?

Guilty Baby

My friend plays in 1080p and is planning to upgrade from a 280X but with all the new cards it's kinda confusing.

970 used to beat 290X, yet the 390 is somehow competing with the 970 now despite the 390X essentially being a 290X with more memory.

It's kinda confusing, if somehow could explain the re-batches the provide some graphs that would be greatly appreciated.

At 1080p get the gtx 970. Performs slightly faster (at 1080p), overclocks much better, uses less power and runs cooler. Chart shows that the 970 at 1080p is as fast as a stock 390x. A 390 is about 10% slower than the 390x. Edit: found a graph using the 390.

This xD The 390 beats it slightly, very good card imo. And no 3.5+5 GB

Thanks for the info. This video contradicts that though, it's what makes me so confused. (Skip to the graphs.)

Well benchmarking isn't an exact science. There are various factors and results will vary from reviewer to reviewer. In the video he used 5 games as benchmarks while in the chart I used the reviewer summarized the performance in 21 games. Some old like wow and others new like the witcher 3 (most of them are modern). Look at the review here : http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/R9_390_PCS_Plus/1.html

Toms hardware also have a review showing the 390X trading blows with the 970 at 1080p. Obviously the 390 will be slower then : http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-radeon-r9-390x-r9-380-r7-370,4178-6.html

They trade blows depending on game but once you OC GTX 970 it will beat R9 390 at 1080p in almost every game out there.

Only thing that makes R9 390 more attractive is that it is more "future proof" due to having a lot more VRAM and also it performs better on higher resolution which is something you may want to consider if you will be upgrading your monitors.

Yeah, I have no clue whats going on with the 390/ 390x, ebcause some people say its a straight rebrands, and the 390x should not perform any different than a 290x 8gb version (running with a memory oc), yet in jays2cents video of the fury x, the r9 390 got 14000 for graphics in firestrike, which is significantly faster than any 290x...

how is that when 390X and 290X are the same cards? the 390 is more similar to 290 because it is a 290 +4GB vram + ''better power delivery''

It's because the 390x is basically a higher clocked 290x with 8gb vram.

While the 390 isn't more similar to a 290. It actually is a 290 with an extra 4gb of vram and a higher clockspeed.

So what's the difference between the 290X, 390X and the 390 anyway.

390X is a cooler 290X with 8gb of faster ram?

390 is a cooler 290X with faster ram?

So that faster ram causes the 970 to no longer beat it???

they don't have faster vram. They only have more vram compared to the old models. The gpu which has 'that faster ram' is called the fury x which uses hbm memory.

The Ram is clocked higher then the 200 series by a fair bit, they used different memory modules that are clocked at 1500mhz that's a 250mhz boost.

I'm guessing a higher memory clock technically means 'faster' memory :P My mistake.

the reason is simple the 290X scores are older with older drivers + 390/x comes with a slight factory OC nothing you cant achive yourself with a 290/X

Try overclocking the memory by 250mhz, the chips don't like that.

and games dont care about that
