AMD has officially deprecated Mantle

This doesn't come as much of a surprise because the future of pc gaming IS DirectX 12. In Anandtech's review of the Fury X (it's finally out, now we just need Linus to release his review), it has been revealed that AMD is dropping support as it is for Mantle and advising people to develop for Vulkan and DirectX 12. Mantle will become AMD's "platform for testing future API developments." This doesn't come at much of a surprise as Mantle, at least in AMD's mind, helped advocate low level APIs. When the R9 285 came out, many, including Tomshardware, attributed its performance degradation while running Mantle to the lesser amount of VRAM it has compared to the R9 280, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore- AMD isn't optimizing GCN 1.2 for Mantle. 

 

 

 

With the Vulkan project having inherited and extended Mantle, Mantle’s external development is at an end for AMD. AMD has already told us in the past that they are essentially taking it back inside, and will be using it as a platform for testing future API developments. Externally then AMD has now thrown all of their weight behind Vulkan and DirectX 12, telling developers that future games should use those APIs and not Mantle.

In the meantime there is the question of what happens to existing Mantle games. So far there are about half a dozen games that support the API, and for these games Mantle is the only low-level API available to them. Should Mantle disappear, then these games would no longer be able to render at such a low-level.

 

 

The situation then is that in discussing the performance results of the R9 Fury X with Mantle, AMD has confirmed that while they are not outright dropping Mantle support, they have ceased all further Mantle optimization. Of particular note, the Mantle driver has not been optimized at all for GCN 1.2, which includes not just R9 Fury X, but R9 285, R9 380, and the Carrizo APU as well. Mantle titles will probably still work on these products – and for the record we can’t get Civilization: Beyond Earth to play nicely with the R9 285 via Mantle – but performance is another matter. Mantle is essentially depreciated at this point, and while AMD isn’t going out of their way to break backwards compatibility they aren’t going to put resources into helping it either. The experiment that is Mantle has come to an end.

Served its purpose and evolved into OpenGL Vulkan. Vulkan isn't going anywhere, and will be used by all games, that are not focusing on DX12.

I really hope devs will go for vulkan and not dx12. Crossplatformness gives Linux guys like me hope.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

You honestly think Microsoft weren't already developing DX12 to provide better multi-core support and hardware control? t's been on the cards since XBone was in development. It just makes sense if they can solidify their hold on gamers by consolidating costs for them and game developers for easier ports and better access to performance.

They were, but they had to start showing it to people, possible even work on it much harder. Before mantle appeared there were no talks about API at all.

I agree, but I think mantle lit a fire under Microsoft and forced them to become public a lot earlier than they were originally planning on doing, and possibly (hopefully) made them put more effort and add more features to DX12 than they would have without mantle. Mantle did its job well; it showed that gamers and technology enthusiasts really do care about things such as the API that a game uses.

AMD did REALLY good for everyone...  and earned NOTHING.

It was always going to be something they brought in in a new OS. And thats been in dev, not just planning for as long as mantle has been out.

 

Even if it was.. thats a rubbish way to run a business... The Intellectual property IS the source of their business.. Otherwise their in a fight blindfolded... Litterally.. cos they can't see what their competition is doing, but their competition can use their moves to pre-empt them.. OR backwards engineer and incorporate into their designs to have very few off years... which is usually the case.

As for mantle, didn't really care much, because I never saw a difference.

This move by AMD makes perfect sense, because Vulkan is the "next generation" of Mantle. So I'm okay with an "older" technology being unsupported now that we have a newer version of it available. I still love of the idea of Mantle/Vulkan, but DirectX is and will still be the king of APIs for gaming on Windows.
