Is 1GB internet worth it?

TheFlyingSquirrel

Hey Peeps,

So I am moving and the two options to me are 100mbps and 1000mbps fibre at £22 and £47 respectively. Has anyone got 1gb/s internet as a sole occupant and found it to make the difference in any scenario?

Edit: Changed the GB to Gb

1Gb*

Also, if you download a lot of games or large files, then yeah it's worth it. Otherwise, no.

I'd rather look into the other qualities of the connection first (Ping, jitter and more importantly the threshold).

Gigabyte for for 47 pounds? That would be a steal, because Gigabyte internet is not even really available.

You probably mean Gb = Gigabit. Still worth it IMO

Hyperoptic

Ahh lucky you been following HyperOptic for the last 3 or 4 years. Just wanting for them to come to my area and then getting 2x 1Gbit lines for my home servers and 1x 100Mb line for my main gaming/streaming system.

I have heard a lot of good things about them.

I have 1gb internet, and when downloading large files or up leading YouTube videos, it is 100% worth it. I can upload a 15 minute 1080p YouTube video in a short amount of time. Also, I do a lot of Linux stuff, so I'm constantly downloading OS's, and 1gb internet really cuts down on time. Go for it. You won't have any regrets.

You know that guy that games on a MacBook? I'm that guy.

For only an additional $25 GBP per month, I'd say that's a no brainer. Might as well get the 1Gbps package.

However, to answer your question seriously, we need mor einforation.

What are your usage habits like? How much Data do you consume per month on average right now? Do you stream a lot of HD content (Netflix, YouTube, etc)? Do you download large files a lot (Movies, Games off Steam, etc)?

Given that you said it's for a Sole Occupant (Eg: You by yourself), I would say that 100 Mbps is certainly fast enough, and would still be kick-ass fast, but for that little price difference, I personally would just opt for the 1Gbps upgrade.

Wow here I am paying AT&T $60/mo or something for 24/2 Mb internet... and that's good for my area

American telcos are truly horrible.

Anyways, get the fastest option they have. Internet can never be too fast.

I don't right now, but I used to have Google Fiber. Realistic speeds for downloading things on the net and if I remember correctly even Steam didn't appear to really break 50mbps much, maybe 100. Where I bet it'd pay off is multiple downloads coming from different sources. Like downloading 5 YouTube videos and a Steam game and some torrents and Linux ISOs all at the same time. Then the max upload from any one of the sources wouldn't limit you and you'd actually be taking advantage of that bandwidth.

It could also be nice for upload, like video chat or cloud backups of large amounts of data. (If you're a real hoarder and store multiple (even up through tens of) terabytes, that initial upload of even several months can be painful!)

I currently have 100mb/s, sure it's fast, but I would love gigabit internet. Mainly cause the upload I have is shit.

I have 150/10 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Internet, and on Steam, I can often max out my download (18.75 MB/s). Perjhaps it's your location and the specific Steam Content Servers you're connecting to? Also, I don't recall if that's happened with a single Steam Download, or multiple concurrent ones adding up. I don't often download multiple steam games at once (Usually only during Summer/Winter Sale, etc).

I'm on Hyperoptic 1gbit... Yes its worth it!

However your pricing is wrong as you have left out the line rental, but they generally give a discount for the first 6 months.

Mine was already installed at the property so I even got the install costs dropped.

1gb Internet only is £60/m

1gb Internet with phone is £63/m

If you download loads of porn, yes.

It can be good for in-home streaming, 4K video, etc. Otherwise, I wouldn't see a reason. 75 Mb IMO is enough.
