Help with a NAS build

Go to solution Solved by Electronics Wizardy,

I know I will be doing a lot of transcoding because they are streaming to mostly Xbox's. I do know what raid numbers are pretty much as far as raid 0,1,5,6, & 10 but when you said MD or ZFS you lost me lol. I was planning on either getting Blue or Red drives 3 drives with 2tb of space should last me a pretty long time. For booting I probably will get a cheap SSD though same as my gaming rig. Since I will be doing transcoding what processor can you recommend?

The celeron should be enough for one 1080p steam being transcoded, but don't expect more than 2 streams.

If you using an xbox the celeron is enough.

MD and ZFS are ways of doing raid via software. MD is the raid software is linux. ZFS is from Solaris but can be used on FreeBSD(Freenas) or Linux. I recommend using red drives. You can save some money and get a used old harddrive for cheap from surplus stores if you live near those. SSD's have no benefit for basic servers.

Hey guys,

I would like the Linus community to help me build a NAS. I have about 1.5TB of media (movies & music) currently, and I would like to build a dedicated NAS for Plex, no games, no spreadsheets, just Plex. I have about 3-4 external network devices that will be using this account and 2 internal network devices. So if you guys could PC Part Picker me a few build options that would be great. It took maybe 2 years to accumulate those movies just to give you somewhat of a rate of data usage. I need something low power but won't lag if 3 devices are connected at the same time. Thanks in advance.

And this is what I came up with on my own:

NAS Build

AMD Ryzen 5 3600, ASUS B350-F Gaming, Trident Z RGB 3200MHz 16GB, PowerColor Red Devil 5600 XT, NZXT H500, 1x512GB Seagate Barracuda NVMe, 2x2TB Firecuda 7200RPM, 1x250GB Intel SSD (Cache), 1x4TB Seagate 7200RPM Ironwolf (Backup), 650w EVGA Bronze

my ongly suggestin is a higher teir 80+ certified marking, likle maby gold if you can get that for a resonable price because its more efficient :)

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Don't get green drives, they are bad for Raid arrrays(im assuming your using MD or ZFS). Also what drive do you plan on booting off of. Don't boot from that same drives that store your stuff. I suggest you either get a small ssd, old hdd, or a usb stick for booting the os off of. Freenas works well and you can use most other linux distros if you are comfortable with linux. If plex needs to do transcoding the celeron is slow, but for file transfers it more than enough.

How about one of these for processing

Intel Pentium G3220

Intel Pentium G3460

If you want to know y I'm going Pentium and not like an i5 I'm trying to keep the price low as well as power. I'm going to spend on the drives, but the overall system just needs to work lol.

The celeron is enough for what your doing. The pentiums aren't much faster and the celeron will be able to do 2 xbox streams at once easily. What os do you plan on running?

Anouther thing you could consider is a used server, like poweredge 2950. There faster and have tons of ram, but use lots of power.

I was thinking of FreeNAS as my OS, I don't exactly know why. I guess it was just the most attractive option.

Here's another question. I am using Gigabit ethernet, and since each port only does 1GB of data should I even spend the extra money on 6GB drives or would the 3GB drives be good enough?

The speed of the sata connector doesn't matter. I Gig Ethernet is easily filled by a single hard drive.

Thanks for all of your time man. I'm going to definitely benefit from this info.
