MSI as a Company and Brand

I'm not hoping to start a big debate as I know everyone has their favorite brands. I was curious however how MSI has been as a company lately. Back in the early 2000s I had an MSI motherboard  (cant remember the model) that within about 4 months I went through six of them, it turned out it was an issue with mofsets. I haven't touched MSI since. However I've been hearing a lot more about them as of late and they seem to be cheaper that ASUS (my go to brand).

The way I know them is by their wonderful commercials. In all seriousness, they're pretty solid these days i guess, some people swear by their motherboards, and their GPU coolers are good (afaik).

Asus was my go-to default for many many years, but I know people that have gone through as many as 20 boards in a short timespan (6-months or so). Could have been just a bad production line.

 

Older MSI boards are indeed not that reliable, but their new stuff is awesome and most of the time price/performance is better than most other brands

Times have changed, their products are solid now. 

Asus on the other hand.... Are still as solid as ever

Yeah. The MSI R9 390/X is Sapphire solid.

Good to know, I've been looking at Gigabyte as well. 

 

MSI make good stuff, otherwise you wouldn't have heard of them and seen them on reviews.

 

I don't know I've seen Linus do reviews on products and and absolutely tear them apart. Admittedly I haven't seen one of those in a while. 

Anyway I need a new (well new-ish) PC and I'm broke that is the more money I make the more uses for said money my wife and daughter find lol. So I thought I'd maybe flex from my brand-ism and see what else I could find.

i don't think so, they have about the same reviews as other manufacturers. Every single one of them can have a bad product.

I haven't had much experience with msi, the little experience i've had has been hit or miss, but i don't fault them. every company lets duds through. when you send it in, they'll typically try to fix the problem rather than just outright replace it. Asus is always my go to for mobos, evga and sapphire for graphics cards. MSI makes some good stuff, but like any company, a few low quality products end up slipping through the cracks every now and then.

your story pretty much alike with my brother experience

he had to spend almost a year just to deal with first release of motherboard Pentium 4 Prescott, he was an IT for some company, and he is incharge for new computer, order 3 motherboard all died within 3 weeks after purchase.

Norhtbridge heatsink literally melting down, and the funny part, it wasn't my brother who giving up the product, it was MSI

I'm guessing they spend too much money for replacing every motherboard my brother claim, he said he received 13 replaced of the same motherboard less than 6 month (for 3 purchase)

not only that, the company who distribute MSI motherboard pulling off that version motherboard from market after that incident, in the end, he got reimbursed for the amount of money he spend for 3 motherboard because all replacement also failing in few weeks.

Technically almost every major brand was having problem with Prescott processor, it is so bad even Intel not so proud with their release.

 

if you have trusted brand for your own preference, I guess it will be better to stick with it.

personally, I'll just buy whatever is the cheapest and gave me longest warranty, and ofcourse based on their customer service report from various forum/websites that relevant for my needs.

Msi has been really impressive on their game. They still don't make super high end gpu coolers, but they make very very good ones and sell them at prices competitive with mostly inferior products.

Their mobos are also quite good for the middle to high end, but nothing as extreme as what Asus has

I had a bad experience with an MSI board back in the core 2 days (nvidia 650 chipset). Never have gone back. I suppose it's time to give them a try again maybe, but I'm still leary.

Gigabyte makes some really solid boards too
