Ever feel bad about your internet speed?

EIijah

This is my actual internet speed at 10pm, it's sometimes slightly better sometimes much worse to the point of pretty much no connection of up to an hour happening most days. We pay for broadband and this is what we get. My friend who lives a 5 minute drive from me gets 10Mb/s so no I don't live in the middle of no where. The exchange box in my area is overloaded with too many people on too few connections. I practically can't download anything till I go to bed and set it up to download over night.

Unless you have worse internet then me no longer feel bad about yours! :D

I normally get 130 Mbps, but around 9 PM it degrades significantly thanks to some well-documented congestion issues. Sometimes it goes as low as 20 to 30 Mbps. :(

Here's my 10:30 PM speeds. Way below advertised. Vodafone, fix yer crap!

when I had .5 mb/s up and down, I felt it gave me time to contemplate my existence between page loads...

On a serious note, it wasent too bad, because I had a pretty slow laptop back then, so I didnt really need to download much.

In certain situations, I could also splurge on myself and select 480p youtube videos (likely would take 5 times the length of the vid to load xD)

I've actually noticed my internet picking up speed in the last few days, normally I'd be lucky to get 1.3MB/sec in my room over wifi, with 1.5MB sec being possible with ethernet (I was on dialup most of the time beforehand because wireless is so damn expensive and unreliable for what you get), and around 700kbps being normal, as I type I've got a 720p youtube video streaming and download going at 1MB/sec.

What does your ISP subscription include? This is dial-up speed.

It's a regular broadband package, 80Gig for $85. We've called and complained and the people on the phone always say someone will be sent but the company knows what's up they just don't wanna pay to fix it.

I would love to have a stable 1 MB connection hell I'd even love a stable 1Mb connection... right now .25Mb's whiile being terrible it's worse that it isn't even stable

Often I'm lucky to even load the youtube page.... and it sucks because I have a decent gaming rig but no online gaming or even just constant downloading of games to play for a bit, I have to make decisions on what to get and for big stuff like gta I go to a friends house and grab his download.

Tell them that they are failing then (just look at the grade) and see if there are any other providers. I'm only paying $50 for 100GB month to month on ADSL2 (it would be 500GB on a plan-and it would cost another $20 with a phone on the plan, and this is very good for Australian internet as well-especially a Telstra subsidiary.), and when I was at the south island for a holiday the Internet was far better than what your getting.

No other provider could do any better, a hardware upgrade is required

I am with Virgin media in UK. I get 100/15. I get than 24/7 and at night it's sometimes faster but I always get a minimum of 100Mbps. I pay for that so I expect it to be at a 100Mbps. If they need to throttle my connection because someone else needs to have some speed, then they need to upgrade the infrastructure. There is a company in Bournemouth, right next the me (Southampton) that does gigabit internet, yes- GIGABIT. As soon as they step into my town I'll be all over that gigabitness..

Yeah, my internet right now is 35 mb up and down, and thats probably the point where I dont have to think about how big downloads are, as most of them will finish within a couple of hours. (I remember trying to download gta 4 on .5 mb/s in India... took damn near a week xD)

But it's like $10 a month, so I don't really care.

Meanwhile, I've been persuading my parents to get us fiber! (I'm still in school if you're wondering about the 'parents' bit)

That is pretty shit but my upload speed is only a little better than that.

I have no problems with the download speed, usually it is in the region of 15/16MB/s but the upload speed is fucking piss poor. Uploading a 200MB video to Youtube would take around 44 years.

I feel for you bro you should check if you can get fibre in your area I don't know if your from the Uk but BT has started to bring fibre to rural areas and small towns and Virgin do larger cities. When I lived in the city I was getting 89 Mbs downloads with virgin and now I've moved back home I'm with BT and I'm getting around 32Mbs. I've had plenty terrible packages in the past though so I really do feel your pain.

Edit: just looked at the server location so guess you're not in the Uk even still you should still check I live in the middle of no where and i can get fibre so chances are you can aswell.

Uploads are always going to be poor to avoid line saturation I had 100 Mb broadband and was getting around 89 Mbs downloads and only 8-11 Mbs upload. Just think of it this way would you rather they capped your downlaods so you could get better upload speeds.

27 minutes at your upload speed to be exact ;) but uploading for me is no issue, I never really do more than the odd photo or 2

I actually never had to complain about my connection: I usually get around 150/10, and that is what I pay for. Sometimes it goes down a little in peak-hours, but I rarely notice it unless I am downloading something large like a steamgame. Sometimes I get more downspeeds, so that's always fun :-).

Going higher then this in the future will be always a good thing, but atm I won't get much more out of it anyway since I'm usually more bottlenecked on the serverside then on my ISP side (unless they slow down specific servers but I never really noticed that before).

It's not blazing quick but 50 down and 5 up is what we pay for and 52-54 down and 5.5-6 up is what we typically score on SpeedTest. It's pretty consistent too. Even during peak hours. I think that's largely due to it being municipal cable run by the power/water company that's very recently had some money dumped into it for upgrades. Their network is actually overbuilt for the amount of customers they have. Our town has something rare in the US. Competition. AT&T U-verse, Charter, and municipal cable are all available here. This town isn't even big.

Also the best part is the municipal cable has no data limits. When I was in college and was limited to Comcast, my roommate and I (both computer geeks) got warned at least twice about going over the limit (250GB a month). Here, I absolutely wear out Steam and HD streaming with no worries.

All I know is that Century Link continues to throttle me. It's gotten worse since I reported them to the FCC. Now the internet health test at battle for the net, won't even finish.

Can't even watch a single 1080p video on youtube anymore. Stops every two seconds to buffer, and sits there for a while.

I would have it capped without a hesitation. I'd like somewhere around 3-4MB/s upload which will give me the enthusiasm to make some more videos. Maybe it is time to look into fibre optics

10bucks 4475503662.png

I wish governments in all countries would realize how bad is for the future to not invest in internet infrastructure, when more and more businesses rely on it year by year.

They should make laws that ISP's follow some standards in that regard but oh well, 85$ for that speed its just too much, you people are made fun of by corporations, sorry for you.

I think it's just a bit unfair that nearly everywhere in NZ 10-100Mb/s speed is available except where I live, There is a circle around us of fine internet it is only my road (Long road) that has shit internet
