They seem to have a revolutionary design and seem to be really well built. The VT supports AM3 and LGA1155.. Are they just ridiculously loud or inefficient? They look pretty damn sweet to me...

yes it is revolutionary in the way that it "spirals" sideways, but in practice it does not perform very well

It's mainly due to size if you had a CPU cooler in a similar form factor an axial (propeller) or regular pressure fan would give better performance in the given space. The centrifugal or tower cooler in the photo with a fan in the center isn't very efficient in small sizes compared to regular axial(propeller) fans which are more suited for lower air movement and pressure. 

 

The point where centrifugal fan shine are in higher voulme applications and in larger sizes such as a furnace where they can push a lot of air and in high pressure.
