Budget Semi-Used Rig

Hello everyone! this is my first time posting so i hope I'm in the right spot. I am building a budget rig for a friend of mine. I've sorted out most of the parts, but I am having a little trouble deciding on a GPU. I have a budget of $650 USD, $125 of which has been spent on buying a used cpu and mobo (FX-6300 and gigabyte mobo), and $525 left over for the rest of the components, I have priced out an HDD, Case, Ram and PSU for $230, which would give me $300 for a GPU, however if I include a small SSD, I only have around $225 for a GPU. I am planning to buy the GPU used, and my question is twofold. Firstly, should I get the SSD even though I'll lose quite a bit of money for a GPU, and secondly, what would be the best option at a $225 Price point for a used GPU. If I go with no SSD and a $300 GPU I would buy a GTX 970.

My planned specifications for the computer are;

CPU:Fx 6300 Overclocked to around 4 Ghz

RAM: 8 GB Corsair

PSU:  Corsair 600W 80+ Bronze

HDD: 1Tb WD Blue

SSD: Possibly ~120GB

GPU:????????

Any help would be Greatly appreciated, thank you.

Get the SSD, and you can get an r9 290 with $225 (with eBay pricing)

I really don't recommend he FX-6300. It has no real upgrade path and lags behind with gaming especially because of its fake and slow 6 cores.

Well for sub 150, I couldn't really find any really competitive CPU/Mobo combos from intel. If i had infinite funds, i would've gotten an i5 or i7. if you have an overclockable cpu and mobo for less than $150, then id really really like to hear about it.

Assuming that the card hasn't been used for bitcoin mining.

Yeah, always have to be careful about mining cards.

My only concern with team red is drivers, which have historically lagged behind nvidia. though a 290 is a nice card.

I hate when people are fanboys. I buy games like a year late, so drivers are no issue.

I have a pair of eBay R9 270 GAMINGs that I paid $120 each for. Quite happy with them.

You could get an R9 290 for that kind of money, but it kinda seems like you cheaped out on the CPU.

True, I'm on a budget. But this rig is not designed to be a 4K or surround PC. Its designed to give someone who doesn't have much money a basic machine so that they can enjoy newer games at fair levels of detail. I could always sell the CPU and motherboard, and I am open to suggestions for Cpu's and Mobo's i could buy for less than $150. Less than $200 even.

I paid $180 for my FX 8320 and Gigabyte mobo brand new. About a year ago.

If you already have the CPU/mobo just buy a GPU and think about upgrading the CPU in the future.

yeah that probably whats going to happen. if i find a good deal for a 8320, 8350 or 8370, i might just sell the 6300 and use what was left of my budget for Cpu to get it.
