How to build up a media collection?

On the internet I see alot of people who use stuff like plex and xbmc and have lots of music and media. How do they do this? It takes so long to tag music and rip dvds.

It builds over time. If you rip your DVDs onto you computer and label them properly as you go, it can build up fairly quickly. 

 

A lot of people undoubtedly use illegitimate means to get their media though.

How to build your collection (as per librarian trainee's terms):

  1. Selection: Select materials that you like in the medium that you prefer... be it physical or digital... make sure to read the terms of use of the material...
  2. Acquisition: Purchase said materials...
  3. Cataloging/Indexing: Organize the materials in a manner that you can understand and memorize by hand. A media interface like plex would be good here, but you can also use Calibre (it can handle stuff other than ebooks... especially if you have a physical collection... it also has a nice user-centric tag system...) This will make it easier to search and access your media...
  4. Circulation: Prepare the necessary tools to view the media... You might want additional codecs, video rendering software (like MadVR), or even an HTPC so you can stream your videos from where you store them to your living room...

I use XBMC and it is now Kodi but all the stuff on mine is just from repositories somewhere. I own like 1 movie I put on but the rest I stream free and 1080 HD. Even live cable options

I can't understand why you see tagging music as problem? WinAmp, Foobar and even iTunes can auto-fetch tags to almost any CD form music. Only really small and unknown bands aren't included. With good setup its fast to do and you can do it while doing other stuff. Rpping movies and TV series really does take time. But when you have some to spend, use it to that.

You need few addons. CDripper and freedb at least. I can't remember what else there might be and my windows PC is in pieces atm so can't really check either.
