IPv4 Internet address out of stock

jos
On Wednesday, for the first time, the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) had to tell an applicant for new Internet addresses to wait. ARIN simply didn’t have any blocks of addresses big enough to satisfy that applicant’s needs.

This day has been coming for some time, according to ARIN President and CEO John Curran. It’s a step on the path toward total depletion of Internet Protocol Version 4 addresses, the type that most devices on the Internet still use. IPv4 only has about 4.3 billion addresses, and the so-called “free pools” administered by official Internet registries like ARIN are close to running out.

There are only about 150,000 addresses left in the pool at ARIN, one of five regional Internet registries around the world. Some may get returned if an address holder goes out of business or fails to pay its dues, and there will be a few more distributions from a global pool run by the Internet Association for Assigned Names and Numbers. How much will come in from either of those sources isn’t clear.

Meanwhile, requests for IPv4 addresses are on the rise, according to ARIN, which is not surprising given the prospect of supplies running out. The growing demand and dwindling supply could lead to total depletion within weeks,

Guess dedicated IP are out of question. Hope IPv6 will be implemented in faster pace.

I didn't knew we were this close to run out of addresses.

Im sure this only relates to America. We are running out but we are slowly making the transisition to IPV6.

My only fear is trying to explain to somebody their IP when its HEX.

@Trik'Stari

I've been wondering the same. I have been hearing about it for years and see it advertized on all the routers I've installed.

Why have we not fully implemented IPv6 yet?

You can blame our ROOT DNS servers for that. They are still (mostly) IPV4 and need protocols like 6to4 to let IPV6 function on them... as with everything we wont do it until we absolutely have to.

Because the internet is run by, maintained by and used by corporations who dont like change because it costs them short term profit margins on upgrading their gear

Yes, IPv6 has been in pretty much all devices for the past couple of years, but having it as a feature inside your router/switch/device is very different from implementing it. And, a lot of devices are 10-15 years old and don't know IPv6. Changing them requires money and there's no ROI on changing a switch/router to get IPv6.

Solution:

Raise the prices on IPv4 addresses (for corporations) to a ridiculous level

yeah but that is anti-consumer/competition/muh freedoms if the PR firms of those corporations have anything to do with it

This is fucking retarded, stupid slow industry always slow to adopt new software tech.

When i leave just ipv6 enabled like 90% of the websites dont work not even youtube wtf people.

Why do we even need any adjustments, ipv6 and 4 should have had backwards compatibility, this is so stupid.

Tough shit. They're multi-billion dollar corporations, they can eat a 1% hit to their profit margins.

not when they have to "care" about their shareholders. Shares are the stupidest thing ever. but also the easiest to gain money through

I am pretty sure this was in the original ideas when they were trying to find a replacement for IPv4. However, for technical reasons (I guess), it was not possible to allow backwards compatibility. At least, it is possible to run IPv4 and IPv6 side by side, which allows a smoother transition. IPv4 uses decimals while IPv6 is hexadecimals.

LIE? HOW DARE YOU SUGGEST THAT WE ARE AN HONEST COMPANY! *proceeds to inflate the number of sold APUs to raise stock levels for a quarter*

I'm not sure how people take on this problem

Major problem sometimes isn't about the money

seriously, IPv6  is complicated

even with easy access DHCP enabled devices across all platform, it takes ages for people to adapt, and they still have problem to manage this

if we solely depends on company to do this on consumer (and they already did, because I doubt most people can do it by themself) then we may not have control with our network again.

just look at this number

b02639da59.png

how people expect something to be fixed if they don't even know what is broken

when I ask people, What is your IP number most of them didn't even know.

when you need to apply this for whole network, I doubt you can even remotely remember your IP range for your home network without taking a note.
