Overclocking my 970

Kingslayer Kyle

Hello there,

My Current Build is:

i7-4790K

GTX970

I'm wanting to overclock my GTX 970,

I've had it since it was released and I'm getting bored of the same performance and I want to get as much performance as possible,

I'm also wanting to upgrade to a better display with a bigger resolution. Not sure on 1440 or 4K yet, I currently have a 1080p monitor.

So my question is, because i have a reference-style cooler I'm not sure overclocking would be very good and i'm considering buying an aftermarket GPU cooler so than I can achieve a good overclock.

I've had a look on the Internet and so far I've found the NZXT Kraken G10 and the Arctic Accelero Xtreme III that look like they would get the job done.

I just wanted to check that i'm making the right decision though before i decide to purchase one of these solutions and if the performance afterwards will justify the cost,

Many thanks,

Kyle.

Not too sure about OC'ing but if its just the single 970, 1440p is what you would want.

I have used the kraken g10, and while it cools the core well (depends on which cpu cooler you chose), the vram and vram get no cooling (other than the fan that is likely not even pointing at the vrms).

Due to that, and the fact that the reference 970, has the same cooler as more power hungry cards like the 980ti, but uses significantly less power, you can probably get a very good overclock as is.
