how do I know if the wifi card on my laptop is faulty or just crap.

CPU: FX 8320 | MOBO: Gigabyte 970A-D3P | RAM: G.Skill Ares 2x4GB | GPU: Sapphire Dual-X R9 270X | Storage: Seagate SSHD 1TB | Case: Corsair 200R | PSU: CM 550W V-Series

Buy a cheap little USB wifi adapter. You can get them <10$. If it works fine than it was your laptops card, if it doesn't then it's something else.

Well, whats going wrong with it?

the connection is so bad, my sisters could be further away from me and they connect up just fine, I could even sit next to the router and it would still be shit.

It could just be a driver issue. You should post more details ... like what laptop you are using. What Wifi card. What OS. What driver version ....

Yep, we need more information...  I'm going to either suggest driver issues or its just a weak wireless card.

updated the driver yesterday didn't do anything, laptop is a toshiba satelite l50d-bo13 running windows 8.1. 

card is a broadcom 802.11n

That's not a valid model number for Toshiba.

That's not a valid model number for Toshiba. 

reference the L50D-B series, it has an amd a8, r5 graphics and 8gb of ram.
