Overclocking my Q6600 (noob)

Hello everyone,

i was wondering if people could give me advice on how to overclock my q6600

i have a seidon 120 AIO watercooler, and my current core temps are around 50oC

i've never overclocked before so i was hoping people could tell me exactly what to change and look out for when i'm trying to overclock

as well as maybe some experiences you've had with the q6600 and what temps you have on yours

thanks

Assuming you have a motherboard that can do it, you want to adjust the FSB. Overclocking a Q6600 is NOT like overclocking an unlocked processor.

What model of motherboard do you have? That will give us a lot more info to work with.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

GOOGLE

"Q6600 BSEL MOD"

/Cranks the 800Mhz/1066Mhz FSB to 1066Mhz/1333Mhz, upping the CPU clocks with it.

Open CPU-Z and see what 'Stepping" your Q6600 is, some steppings (revisions) are better than others,...after some googling you should be able to tell if its feasible to do to your CPU.

Do that THEN OC it via Motherboard if you can.

I used this method because MANY Dell machines do not allow overclocking via the Mobo (Locked out) so I used this to take 2.4Ghz to 3.0Ghz @ stock volts :)

But if your mobo allows the OC'ing ability, the BSEL mod, THEN the OC, could take you way past what you expected.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I'm currently working on getting a stable 3.2 ghz out of my Q6600

Asrock p43 Twins 1600

6 gb DDR2

Silverstone Zeus 650 watt psu

GTX 550tti

Masscool 8WT15-17cooler (sub-optimal, I know)

Having problems atm, willedit when straightened out.

I have a problem with mine too. I overclocked it to 3.0 it was stable untill one day like month after overclocking the PC froze i had to restart it. After the restart there was no overclock but when i check in the Bios the settings that i made were still the same. After that i tryed 50 times reseting the settings and stuff but nothing worked and  now i have 2.4ghz. Can someone help ?
