Noise of Corsair RM 650W 80+ Gold Certified ATX PSU

Nawras

Hey there!

My build will include an i7 processor and a GTX 980 ti, and according to a lot of articles and youtube videos, 500-600 Wattage PSU is enough so I think this would be a good choice as it also comes from a good manufacturer. (correct me if I'm wrong).

I don't like noise. Does anyone know how noisy it can be? I've looked online and couldn't find answers.

That's all!

What kind of noise? Too high fan speed or some whine?

Uhmm I would like to know both. If you know a PSU that is quieter than this and has around the same Wattage please let me know.

RM series PSU's are stupid quiet from my experience. I own the RM1000 and use it daily, and I honestly couldn't tell you when/if the fan ever spins up. The thing is a beast!

Well you cant go wrong with EVGA G2 or any Super Flower or higher end Seasonic PSU.

I have Super Flower Golden Green 550W (The old version. New version are marked as HX) and it is super silent.

EDIT:

For mudular one you would want to look at Super Flower Leadex or Super Flower Golden King.

EVGA G2 would be a lot cheaper though while still being a lot silent, modular and reliable.

I dont know much about Seasonic PSUs other than that they are very reliable... I cant comment on noise.

my rm550 is silent. though ive heard that the psu itself is a cheap rebrand and has potential to fail or have coilwhine. ive been told i should get something else.

Awesome! Glad to know that this series is good. Do you recommend me to go for the 650w?

Also I heard they might make whines after 3-4 years of use, did you notice any of these?

Thanks for these names, will look more into them. Since you can't comment on Seasonic's noise, I don't see myself buying one of their's PSU's. I really need it to be as silent (and good) and possible.

Don't need whines. Might consider this option then, thanks!

The RMi series just came out dude. Much better internals, 7 year warranty and full corsair link. Should be around the same price. http://www.corsair.com/en/power-supply-units

I'm not up to date with PSUs lol. Are they noisy / produce whines?

RM series is great, RMi series is even better. RMi is quiet like the RM, but has a newer set of internals and a longer warranty. I think you'll love it, and I suggest getting one ;)

Will look into that too, thanks!

@Nawras I'd really go for either the RMi750 or 850W imo since it will last at least 7 years with the warranty. So you can use it for your next 1-3 builds :)

So do you recommend me not sticking with a 500-600 wattage choice despite that I don't need more than that?

no. you will be fine with 550-700 watt psu. no reason to go higher. I would say 750 if you plan on water cooling. otherwise, single card, I would do 550.

Yeah, definitely. It's not that much more expensive. Also, PSUs loose efficiency over time. So you'll be glad when you have a 700W-800W PSU in 5 years instead of a 600W one :)

m8, where are you getting your information. this is not correct. a psu is less efficient the higher is goes when the current draw is less than 20% of the total capacity. you are better off gettting a smaller psu where the load is around 30-40% at idle and 70-80% at load.

Dead. Frickin. silent.

Had the rm750 for quite a while now, i am not even sure if the fan works. No dust on the dustfilter, and no noise whatsoever.

Compared to the supernova g2 (superflower/evga) it is even more quiet. The g2 was unbearable, as it was louder than the graphics card after just half an hour of gaming
