Artifacts in Windows

Hi

Recently I've noticed some random artifacts appearing on my screen.

They resemble squares and rectangles in black or white colors, also sometimes they look like they were cut in half diagonally.

They appear in the bottom right corner and also on the left side of the screen, usually flickering.

They only show after a few hours of light use (watching youtube, twitch, facebook, browsing etc.), and only in desktop and the start menu("metro"), not in games or benchmark programs (tested with Valley). Also after resarting Windows, they go away for a while. The issue is present with both 14.12 and 15.6 beta drivers. I've checked my temps, I see 40-45C on both the GPU and the CPU in idle when artifacts appear.

My specs:

FX8350 (stock)

M5A99FX PRO R2.0

8GB 1866Mhz RAM

MSI R9 280X (stock)

CX750

Hyper 212 EVO

Windows 8.1

Could you tell me what can cause the problems, and a possible solution?

Thank you

Could be bad refresh rate or something wrong with Windows. I'd recommend a reinstall, but that takes time and effort. can you check your refresh rate and test with another monitor?

Its either a software error or a memory error.

Start by doing a memcheck

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

It could be failing memory chips on the graphics card. If possible test with a different graphics card and see if problem occurs again. That will eliminate the graphics card. It does sound like the card is taking a dump..........

I'd agree, but it's kinda weird that games and benchmarks don't artefact

I've seen bad cables for monitors do this. OP: If you have another cable laying around for your monitor, try that instead.

Do the artifact always occur at the same general location?

Thank you for the quick responses.

I have the refresh rate set to 60hz according to monitor specs (ASUS VH228), it's connected via VGA through DVI-VGA adapter as my GPU doesn't vage VGA output.

Now I've set it to EDID defaults, and I haven't experienced any problems so far, but problems appear only after a few hours of use. Unfortunately I can't experiment with other displays as this is my only monitor, and I don't have any other cables either.

If it's software error, what can I do with it? If it's memory error, how do I do a "memcheck" to find it out?

+Zanthros

Failing memory was my first thought as well, but it's strange that games run fine, but light use causes problems. For years I had my GTX 650Ti in this exact same system not having any problems. This 280X is in since early May. I had another 280X from early February until late March when apparently the memory failed on that one. After returning it, MSI sent me an other 280X which was a returned and repaired one from somebody else. It's possible that it wasn't repaired properly, but I hope it's not the case since I don't want to return it again waiting another month to receive an other repaired one that either work or not. Yes, the artifacts occur on the same locations, over the clock on the taskbar (white squares), a little bit above and to the left (there is the cut in half rectangle), and in the Start menu near the left edge of the screen about 1/4 down from the top.(black squares, rectangles.)

The occurrence of the artifacts in the same locations rule out the cable being bad, as a bad or poor cable would not create the inconsistencies in the exact same locations.

A software issue would also not create the problem at the exact same locations.

Personally I would try a different graphics card to see if the problem goes away. I know that this is not always possible but it will be the most effective way to eliminate the graphics card as the issue. If it is not possible to try a different card then download MSI Afterburner. It allows you to plot certain fan speeds for different temperatures on a graph and bump up base the fan speed. The card could have a bad temperature sensor that is inaccurate at the lower end of the temperature range. LINK: http://gaming.msi.com/features/afterburner

See if running the fans at a higher speed at the lower end helps eliminate the problem. I know the 290 is pretty bad at temperatures and many complain about the fan noise. Seeing that this is a "Repaired" card there is no way of knowing what it was repaired of.

Did I help you to fix your problem or at least did offer somewhat valuable advice? Consider giving my post a "informative" or "thumbs up".
